SONAMI's work is supported by a series of commissions and committees that analyze specific issues in the sector  whose objective is to analyze the various themes and regulations that may affect mining in its field of action. Along with this, they propose to the board of the union entity the guidelines to follow regarding specific issues. They act as a representative body of the sector, against the main actors of the State institutions. They advise and participate in the development of guides and technical regulations that will govern the activity.

SMALL MINING COMMISSION

 
During 2017, the Small Mining Committee undertook to analyze and review various matters related to the sector.
During the period, under the direction of Vice President Francisco Araya, the following subjects were analyzed: Pricing for copper in the future market, the Copper Price Stabilization Mechanism, the implementation of the Official Mining Gazette and the Minimata Agreement for the use of Mercury. Gold mining in small-scale mining was also the subject of the instance, which was addressed through a workshop that included the participation of executives from Cochilco, Sernageomin, Enami and mining producers.
In its management, the Committee received, among others, the undersecretary of Mining and the executive vice president of the National Mining Company, to discuss issues such as promotion, planned investments and supply of minerals to its facilities.
 
 
MEDIUM MINING COMMISSION
 
The Medium Mining Commission led by Vice President José Miguel Ibáñez has had an intense activity, meeting periodically to discuss various topics of interest to the sector.
Among the sectoral authorities invited to the instance, Undersecretary Pablo Terrazas and the new executive vice president of the National Mining Company (Enami), André Sougarret, stand out. The national director of Sernageomin, Mario Pereira, and CPI directors were also invited, who spoke about the scope of the Infrastructure Policy Council.
Among other matters addressed by the Commission, the analysis on the application of the Mining Closure Law stands out.
 
 
BUSINESS COMMISSION
 
The body that brings together presidents and general managers of Large Mining held three meetings to exchange opinions on the work of this productive segment. Among the invited authorities, the presence of the Ministers of Mining, Baldo Prokurica, and of the Economy, José Ramón Valente, with whom they discussed the mining program of the government of President Sebastián Piñera, the sending of the pro-investment project and the creation of the Office of Sustainable Project Management.
The instance also received Daniel Hurtado and Carlos Cruz, president and general manager of the Infrastructure Policy Council (CPI), respectively, who spoke about the CPI and its main activities, among which the proposal to create the Infrastructure Fund stands out, and the realization in 2018 of the First Latin American Congress on Infrastructure.
 
 
LABOR COMMISSION
 
The Labor Commission, chaired by Jorge Riesco Valdivieso, is made up of the Human Resources representatives of the partner companies and their legal advisers and analyzes labor matters that affect the sector.
Its objective is to share the good practices of the industry in the matter of human resources, to know the challenges that the sector faces in labor matters, and to analyze the legislative or administrative initiatives that modify the regulation of this matter.
During the year, meetings were held that addressed issues such as Law No. 21,015, which “Incentives the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in the World of Work”; Model for the Measurement and Evaluation of Productivity Factors of Human Capital in Mining and Labor Reform and its effects on the company.
 
 
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
 
The work of the Environment Commission was carried out through the activities of various permanent work committees, made up of representatives of SONAMI's partner companies, and in specific areas of interest to mining.
The committees were Environment and Biodiversity, Community Affairs, Sustainable Explorations, and Closure of Mining Operations and Facilities. Two Subcommittees, Water Resources and Biodiversity also functioned.
The first-mentioned working groups met regularly on a monthly basis and had a total registry of 186 participants between managers and professionals. The subcommittees functioned sporadically over time, as deemed necessary.
The Commission also carried out activities related, among other matters, at the national level with Territorial Planning, Energy and Climate Change, Human Rights in Business, and Indigenous Consultation and application of ILO Convention 169, while at the international level they were subjects of analysis the Minamata Convention, the International Chemical Agenda, Principle 10 of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, the OECD National Contact Point, the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
The Commission had the specialized and permanent support of the Eelaw Law Firm.
 
 
SECURITY COMMISSION
 
The Security Commission was created in 2018, in response to the need expressed by companies to share their experiences and good practices with other companies in the sector. It discusses various topics and regulations that may affect the safety and health of workers in different mining companies.
This commission meets monthly and is structured in three sections. In the first, companies share experiences in terms of accident rates, which can serve as a background to prevent other companies from better facing a similar event. In the second section, the Eelaw Law Firm, SONAMI's external advisor, makes a presentation with regulatory developments. In the third section, meanwhile, companies work to try to standardize their procedures in terms of health and safety. During 2018, we worked on critical controls for light vehicles.
This instance of participation is very important to SONAMI, to collect the concerns of the companies in this matter. Currently, approximately fifteen companies, of medium and large mining, participate in the commission.
 
 
RESPONSIBLE SUPPLY COMMISSION
 
The Responsible Supply Commission of SONAMI was created in October 2018, from the former Abastemin Committee, with the participation of representatives of the companies BHP, AMSA, Teck, Collahuasi, Glencore, Freeport, CAP Mining and, as a guest, CODELCO. It also considers the participation of companies from the Mining Industry.
Its objective is to promote and share excellent practices in supply chain management in large and medium-sized mining companies; develop human capital in the different fields of supply; promote strategic relationship and supplier development; as well as collaborating on various topics and regulations related to the supply area.
As president of the Commission, Daniel Torreblanca, from Glencore, was elected and has a Training Subcommittee chaired by Patricio Díaz of AMSA.
The Commission played an important role in preparing SONAMI's observations to the public consultation on the draft Supreme Decree that establishes goals for the collection and recovery of tires within the framework of Law 20,290 on Extended Producer Responsibility (REP).
