Layfield Geosynthetics

Layfield's REVOC floating cover systems are world-leading systems for water, wastewater, and other floating cover applications. In potable water reservoirs, floating covers protect the water from contamination, evaporation, and the loss of water treatment chemicals (such as chlorine). In wastewater applications, floating covers control odours, collect biogas, and helps to prevent the growth of algae. Layfield's construction group installs floating covers across North America and internationally in select applications. We have achieved Approved Installation Contractor Status through the International Association of Geosynthetic Installers.

We regularly assist designers with floating cover services such as preliminary design, material evaluation and selection, standard detail drawings, specifications, and application design assistance. For longer-term municipal water wastewater floating cover applications, Layfield recommends the use of CSPE. Click here for the 2019 CSPE Performance and History in Long Term Potable Water Storage Applications Technical Paper. CSPE has industry-leading UV weathering capabilities and is also potable water certified. We provide floating covers either fully installed or by design/build contract.

Layfield provides a variety of soil and sludge consolidation solutions. Geotube® dewatering tubes are Layfield’s featured solution for sludge dewatering. The tubes are filled with sludge, and the water flows out through the fabric walls under gravity. Within a short period, the sludge has shed most of its water and can be disposed of as a solid and not as an expensive liquid. Vertical wick drains are a good solution for soil consolidation. The wick drains, in conjunction with a preload, provide a path for water-saturated areas to speed up settlement.

Geomembranes are our most important and diverse group of products. Our fortified flexible membrane liner materials are heavily treated with special stabilizers providing enhanced UV, heat, and chemical resistance. With our state-of-the-art facilities and skilled installation team, we manufacture, fabricate, and install a wider variety of geomembranes than most other providers. We specialize in geomembranes for all containment applications.

AquaDam® is a unique, patented idea that uses water-filled tubes to create aqua barriers and control water to prevent flooding. AquaDam® was originally designed as a method for blocking of streams for pipeline crossings. Using AquaDams to complete pipeline crossings is one of the most environmentally effective methods in use and is ideally suited to crossings involving large diameter pipelines. AquaDams are also ideal for flood control and been used effectively to prevent flooding and form aqua barriers for several communities. Finally, AquaDams are used for temporary water storage for areas stricken by drought or where wildfires are expected.

For over 30 years Layfield has provided tarpaulin and enclosure systems for weather protection in commercial and industrial construction. Our fire retardant tarpaulins and specialized hardware are the dominant system for refinery work in Canada. Our WeatherPro brand of enclosure systems use a number of hardware styles to attach to scaffolding, cable, or other structures.

Storm water control also means the control of flooding. Our Aqua Dams can help control flooding by using available water to hold back rising levels. Aqua Dams are quickly deployed with only a few people and leave no messy sandbags to clean up after the flood.

Layfield has a full range of geotextiles available for all applications. Our woven and non-woven geotextiles are available from stock in most Layfield locations. Did you know that we slit and sew geotextiles? Layfield can cut full rolls of geotextile to different sizes using a band saw and can sew panels of geotextile to large sizes. We regularly sew double-wide and triple-wide panels of fabrics for road and embankment construction.

Layfield provides flexible curtains to accomplish two distinct results; control silt and sediment in water during construction and to direct the flow of water in water and wastewater treatment applications.
Turbidity curtains and floating silt curtains are used to control the release of silt from a construction site. The curtains float in the water and form a barrier to the silt. Different styles of turbidity curtains are available for specific applications and flow rates.
Fixed and floating baffle curtains are used to direct the flow of water to increase the residence time in a pond or reservoir. Fixed baffles are typically bolted to the inside of concrete water reservoirs, while floating baffles are typically placed in wastewater treatment ponds. Layfield can assist you with the design and layout of your fixed or floating baffles.

Everyone knows infrastructure could use a little help, to say the least. Our highways and rural connector roads are now fading into disrepair in many places, and it’s becoming increasingly expensive to maintain a quality road structure.  When cracks and potholes form, contractors are often hired to repave afflicted roads with a fresh overlay of Hot Mix Asphalt, but merely applying a new overlay is somewhat like applying a Band-Aid to a deep wound, especially when reflective cracking can cause serious damage to new repaved roads in a short amount of time. On pavements repaired with merely a new overlay, cracks can return at a rate of one inch per year, requiring yet more repair work and long-term maintenance to be done.

That’s why engineers are working to improve interlayer technology that can arrest the spread of reflective cracking, lengthening the overall lifespan of a road while reducing routine maintenance work on fixing potholes and cracks.
Using a proven interlayer comprised of a grid structure made from fiberglass strands coated with an elastomeric polymer can greatly increase tensile strength and create a higher modulus of elasticity that works to prevent the spread of reflective cracking in pavement. These interlayers have proven to be effective in a diverse array of geographic regions, from hot, dry deserts to cold, wet subarctic areas, and it’s demonstrated a real ability to reduce the rate of return cracking.

Waterproofing roads adds an extra layer of durability, these types of interlayers use this technique to make for maximum road lifespan elongation. Unlike typical fiberglass Interlayers , where the fibers are formed into a grid, the fiberglass strands in these waterproofing materials are formed into a mesh and embedded into high performance polyester mats. This creates a matrix system that allows an asphalt binder to penetrate through the mat, sealing the pavement off from moisture that likes to seep into the road, eating away at pavement and exacerbating reflective cracks, sometimes damaging pavements down to the granular base coarse or even the subgrade.
