"Reduction of greenhouse gases, carbon neutrality and transition towards smart mining" common agenda of the First Latin American Mining Meeting

According to the Colombian president, mining represents 20% of royalties, 18% of exports and generates 150 thousand jobs; In the case of Chile, it contributes an average of 11% to GDP, an additional 6% in linked activities and 55% in exports, for which the leaders invited to encourage the activity that will be a fundamental pillar in the post-pandemic economic recovery.
 
"Mining could attract more than 2,600 million dollars in investments to Colombia, in 2021 alone. In this sense, the country will make a historic leap in mining-energy matters, diversifying its mining basket and promoting the exploration of metallic minerals with which we will put the country as the leader of the energy transition and connectivity ”, said Duque. 
 
In the panel "Mining in the political and economic agenda of Latin American countries", the ministers of mines and energy: Diego Mesa from Colombia, Juan Jobet from Chile, Jaime Gálvez from Peru, Bento Albuquerque from Brazil and Alberto Hensel from Argentina agreed on the need to stop stigmatizing mining given its contribution to the development of countries and the commitments that each government must make to improve its practices, its relationship with the environment and the importance of building trust to take advantage of the geological potential of the territories and consolidate the region as the supplier of the minerals necessary for the global energy transformation. 
 
Additionally, in the discussion "Challenges and opportunities of mining in the face of climate change", the environment ministers of Colombia, Chile and Peru gave an account of the progress of their countries in the implementation of policies for the protection of natural resources and They recalled their participation in important international agreements such as the one signed in Paris in 2015, in which they acquired commitments to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments necessary for a future with low carbon emissions . All this as part of a strategic action plan to achieve the transition towards smart, sustainable and environmentally balanced mining.
