TIMMINS, ON: On Thursday, October 18, 2018, NADF and Bearskin Airlines – A Division of Perimeter Aviation, hosted the 28th Annual NADF Award at the Senator Hotel and Conference Centre in Timmins, ON to celebrate the achievements of seven award recipients and celebrate their contributions towards strengthening Northern Ontario’s economy.
The annual awards were first presented in 1991 to recognize Aboriginal achievement in NADF’s service area, which encompasses the territories of Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Robinson-Superior 1850 and Treaty #3. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Dennis Franklin Cromarty Memorial Fund: a bursary fund supporting Aboriginal students; and the NADF Sponsorship Fund: a fund established by NADF to respond to sponsorship and donation requests received from the communities we serve.
Brian Davey, Executive Director, “I love seeing how, every year, the nominations are different but they all pivot around the same mantra: Aboriginal Prosperity. This is definitely the highlight of our year and our Board and staff look forward to hosting the annual awards every year. Over the past 28 years, the NADF Awards have showcased 175 award recipients and provided a stage for them to share their stories. Aboriginal small business is growing and experiencing wide spread success in terms of profitability and success. They are diverse and are doing business across all industry sectors and markets. Tonight’s award recipients are but a small example of how Aboriginal business is succeeding and contributing to building a strong and vibrant economy in Northern Ontario.”

PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR
Agoke Development Corporation

Agoke Development Corporation is a precedent setting co-operation agreement between the First Nations of Aroland, Eabametoong and Marten Falls. Over the past two years, Agoke has successfully managed and administered the provincial road funding and advocated for a new $600,000 pilot project for bridge and road repairs to establish access blocks for the Nakina Sawmill. Agoke is the only First Nations management entity in Ontario to manage the road funding for the forest management unit they are in.
In March 2018, Agoke made headlines when it announced a historic agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to takeover the Ogoki Forest, which lies within the traditional territories of the three First Nations. For the first time ever, the three First Nations will be the stewards of the land; holding the forest resource license to harvest wood, assign harvest blocks, complete compliance and monitoring of woodland operations, prepare annual work schedules and reports. Agoke is also taking the lead on developing the next 10-year forest management plan for 2020-2030.
The Agoke Board of Directors have worked diligently to build relationships with mills in the region, and their efforts were successful in establishing another ground-breaking joint venture agreement with Nakina Lumber Inc. to restart the Nakina Sawmill. The joint venture is set to yield millions in revenue sharing, sawmill equity options, first-right-of-refusal for road building contracts, log harvesting and delivery, and exploring bio-mass and bio-fuel energy generating opportunities; and is projecting an economic impact of over $50 million in 5 years and creating over 300 jobs.
