Three Mining Executives Named to List of 2013 Most Powerful Women in Canada

Three women executives from the mining industry have been named to the list of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2013 released by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) co-presented by KPMG and Scotiabank.

The three mining executives honoured with the Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women Award for 2013 are Kay Priestly, CEO, Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd., Vancouver, BC; Rebecca Ng, Chief Financial Officer, Xstrata, Markham, ON; and Leanne Hall, VP Human Resources, Noront Resources Ltd., Toronto, ON

KAY PRIESTLY, CEO, TURQUOISE HILL RESOURCES

Kay Priestly was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Turquoise Hill Resources on May 1, 2012. Previously she was a senior executive at Rio Tinto and also served as the Chief Financial Officer of the company's global Copper product group. Ms. Priestly joined Rio Tinto in 2006 as Chief Financial Officer at Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper operations. Prior to her work with Rio Tinto, Ms. Priestly was with the global professional services firm Arthur Andersen for 24 years where she provided tax and consulting services to global companies in the energy and mining sectors.

Ms. Priestly is Chairman of SouthGobi Resources, a director of Stone Energy Corporation and previously served as a director of Palabora Mining Company Limited. She was appointed to the Turquoise Hill Resources board in February, 2011 and a year later she was named Chief Executive Officer.

 

REBECCA NG, CFO, XSTRATA

Rebecca Ng has over  12 years of experience in finance, controllership, governance and reporting with various multi-national mining companies. She has significant expertise  in finance integration and restructuring subsequent to multiple large-scale merger and acquisitions.

From 2006 to 2013, Ms. Ng has served as financial controller for Xstrata Nickel, the world’s fourth largest nickel mining company. Previously in 2005 and 2006, she worked for Noranda Inc. and subsequently Falconbridge Limited as  group controller.  Before that she appointed as the Treasurer of the Board of Falcondo Dominican Ferronickel Limitada, an integrated ferronickel operation in the Dominican Republic which was 85% owned by Xstrata.

Ms. Ng received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hong Kong and was qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Ontario, Canada after finishing business studies in York University. She is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario since 2001 and a member of the Women’s Executive Network in Canada.

 

 

LEANNE HALL VP HUMAN  RESOURCES, NORONT RESOURCES LTD

Leanne Hall has over 19 years of leadership experience in the human resources industry. In 1988, Leanne founded a human resources company, Woodland HR Inc., with the vision of contributing to the First Nation and Aboriginal communities of Northern Alberta by providing professional career development programs and services.

In addition to a degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, Leanne has completed a specialized program at the Society of Human Resource Management as well as a Career Development Program at Concordia University College. She possesses expert skills in demonstrating First Nation community partnerships, promoting engagement, and encouraging relationship building. She is a member of the Noront Resources First Nations Advisory Board, the Canadian Institute of Mining, and is on the Board of Directors for Women in Mining Canada.

The 100 Most Powerful Women In Canada Awards celebrate the achievements of women across the country excelling in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. This year’s Leadership Summit and Awards Gala on December 4  is appropriately themed "What Glass Ceiling?" 

During the Summit to be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto, The Top 100 Award Winners will provide insights on how they managed to become leaders in their sectors to inspire more than 400 women in attendance, including the next generation of female leaders. 

Speakers at this year's Summit include Lisa Lisson, President of FedEx Express Canada, Christine Magee, President of Sleep Country Canada, Dr. Fiona Costello, Associate Professor, Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Surgery (Ophthalmology), Clinician Scientist at Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, and Sue Paish, CEO of Lifelabs.
