YMCA Announces New Seniors Program in Partnership with Canadore College
The YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, North Bay YMCA, in partnership with The Village at Canadore College and funding support from the North Bay and Area Community Foundation, is excited to announce the Digital Inclusion, Seniors Connection and Opportunities Hub (DISCO).
The DISCO Hub has a focus on providing technology to seniors who might not currently have access by way of a mobile Hub. The Hub will set up in various locations in the city to provide access to technology and technology classes. Devices such as tablets or laptops will be available for seniors to use, where staff will help them use the devices and teach them internet safety and security through educational workshops. Every week they will have the opportunity to connect and get active through a short workout and leave with a wellness kit.
“The YMCA is thrilled to be a recipient of the Emergency Community Support Fund through the NBACF and that we have developed a strong partnership with Canadore College. The DISCO Hub is supported by the Alzheimer’s Society as well as Living Fit, to support the seniors in our community whom we know are keen to stay connected but can be limited by their knowledge and access to digital tools. The project promises to greatly assist seniors with social connection, which is critical to support mental health and quality of life and we see this as outreach that will be required well beyond the pandemic.” said Nicole Beattie, Vice President of Philanthropy, Marketing and Communications at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario.
“In November 2019, The Village at Canadore College received nearly $2 million dollars in funding through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. The Village Collective Impact Project, aims to develop intergenerational inclusion opportunities that improve outcomes for seniors and Indigenous seniors living in our community. The YMCA’s innovative approach to supporting people 55+ will help reduce the risk of social isolation through the use of technology, and meets a big need for seniors. This is exactly what this funding is for.” says Micheline McWhirter, Project Manager. Canadore College is excited to provide funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program and to staffing support.
The DISCO Hub will take place Monday to Thursday for one hour sessions. The Hub will be accessed in various locations within North Bay. The YMCA and Canadore College are working closely with Public Health to ensure all necessary safety procedures are in place. The DISCO Hub launches today, Monday, July 13th. Lead - Indigenous Poverty Reduction Education Program (IPREP)
- Responsible for project management support to the Manager of Community Based and Contract Training by using the Client Impact Model to implement the project
- Establish community out-reach and act as the primary liaison from the IPREP between the College, First Nation Communities, and employers
TECHNOLOGIST – DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
- Supervise and guide students in the Dental Hygiene program to meet the learning outcomes of skills and assessment courses in a clinic setting
- Plan, organize, and conduct demonstrations, explaining correct procedures, skills, and theoretical principles
GENERALIST, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT & TALENT MANAGEMENT
Reporting to the Director, Organizational Development & Talent Management (ODTM), the Generalist is accountable for providing a range of human resources functions supporting the College’s strategic plan and the implementation of short and long-term projects.
Technician – Dental Hygiene Program
- Collaborate with students and colleagues to provide an optimal learning environment
- Work with community agencies and dental offices to recruit patients for student clinical labs
Professor, Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Program
- Deliver lessons covering Level 1 introductory level curriculum to Pre-Apprenticeship students over an eight-week period
- Teach theory in class and practical projects in the Commerce Court Campus lab
