CEO Message: Far from Empty

I was surprised to hear reports of some commissionaires feeling like they couldn’t contribute much during this pandemic. On the contrary.
Even after occupants leave a building—whether it’s because their workday is over or a global pandemic strikes—our commissionaires continue to protect valuable property, assets and information around-the-clock.
In the case of the Canadian Museum of Nature, Dawn Calleja, Senior Editor, The Globe and Mail, wrote an article entitled, “Inside a national museum shuttered by COVID-19, scientists scramble to save specimens, living and dead, from neglect.”
Published on 18 May 2020, Ms. Calleja’s article describes how millions of preserved plants and fossils, as well as living creatures to be fed and cared for such as fish and insects, were at risk.
When the museum’s 20,400 sq. m. research and collections facility in Gatineau and public-facing building in downtown Ottawa shut down in mid-March, the curators and research scientists began to scramble to secure their collections.
In the weeks that followed, one of the curators Ms. Calleja interviewed said her worries kept her up at night. What would happen if a leak went undetected, there was an HVAC malfunction, or an insect infestation occurred? Any sudden or prolonged environmental changes inside the building could ruin her life’s work.
This is but one of many examples of the value of having a reliable, vigilant security presence, just like we do at the Canadian Museum of Nature: because fewer people in a building full of irreplaceable things don’t make the building or its contents less valuable.
And, being there for our clients can perhaps help them gain greater peace of mind and get a better night’s sleep.
