China: Vale supports Hope Schools in the fight against COVID-19 and students and teachers send their good wishes

Jul 15, 2020
Vale has made important contributions to China's economic development over the past 47 years, however, it is not just business dealings that promote and strengthen the partnership with the country. Vale is also a partner to the Hope School Initiative in China since 2008. The four Hope Primary Schools, funded by the company, benefit around 2,000 students and teachers in China's earthquake-hit areas. In May 2020, Vale donated 80,000 masks, thermometers, daily hygiene necessities and laptops to these schools. This donation is helping them safely reopen after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The students wanted to send a message of thanks and support to the employees of Vale and to the people of Brazil who are also facing the COVID-19 situation. “Those are very warm and caring messages” said Tracy Xie, Country Head of Vale in China, “When China was hit by the epidemic early this year we received many good wishes from our colleagues around the world. I truly hope the situation in Brazil will get better very soon. In this difficult time, the partnership with China is growing stronger with our long-term commitment to the wellbeing of society and the partnership with the Hope schools is a great example of this”.

The Hope Primary Schools have become a symbol of company’s commitment to becoming a long-term partner and a responsible corporate citizen. From 2008 to 2020, Vale has donated around 7 million RMB to support four Hope Primary Schools affected by earthquakes. Three of the four Hope Schools, funded with company’s support, are located in the Province of Sichuan, and one in the high elevation of Qinghai Province.

Learn more about the Hope Project:

Launched by the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) in 1989, the Hope Project is one of the most influential social programs in China. It has been supported by people and companies from all sectors and walks of life. As of September 2019, the Hope Project had received a total of 15.23 billion yuan (about 2.16 billion U.S. dollars) in donations and aided over 5.99 million students who faced financial hardship and poverty related challenges.

A total of 20,195 primary schools were also built. Hope Project celebrated its 30 years anniversary at the end of 2019 and the President Xi Jinping sent congratulation messages to the project. Vale was proud to receive the “Award of 30 years of outstanding contributions to the Hope Project” in recognition of its support to this initiative.
