CM incorporates Gold Fields as a new partner

Apr 22, 2021
During the last Board meeting, the official incorporation of the South African company Gold Fields as a new CM partner was announced.

Gold Fields is one of the world's leading gold producers, with eight operating mines and projects in Australia, Ghana, Peru and South Africa. In Chile they have a presence through Salares Norte, in the Atacama Region, a project under construction recently approved by the company's Board of Directors, which will process 2 million tons of mineral per year for the production of doré metal, gold and silver.

The initiative, whose environmental impact study was approved on December 18, 2019, considers an investment of US $ 860 million and it is estimated that it will generate 2,700 jobs at the peak of construction and 900 jobs on average during the operation of the mine.

Worldwide, Gold Fields has an annual production of approximately two million oz of gold equivalent; with attributable reserves of the order of 48.1 million oz and resources of 96.6 million oz. It also has significant copper reserves.

“It is a very good addition to the Mining Council. Gold Fields is one of the main gold producers worldwide, and its Salares Norte project will undoubtedly be a boost to the economic and social development of the Atacama Region and the country in general, ”says Joaquín Villarino, Executive President of the Mining Council.

Meanwhile, Max Combes, Project Director of Gold Fields, said that “we are very happy to join the Mining Council, an association that has historically been very important to face the various challenges of mining in Chile. This will allow us to know first-hand the different experiences of its associates, which will be of great value to us and will also allow us to generate valuable synergies between all the actors ”.
