Canadian Project: Geotechnical, Infrastructure, and Waste Management Design for EKATI Diamond Mine

Mar 26, 2014

Since 1994 Tetra Tech has been the geotechnical engineering company of record for all the infrastructure components for Canada’s first diamond mine, BHP Billiton Canada’s EKATI.

Tetra Tech was initially responsible for development of infrastructure designs and project management, including site support; field program support; and field supervision of construction projects for:
• Three frozen core and two hybrid frozen/lined dams
• Four waste rock storage areas
• Surface water collection systems
• Three large diversion channels
• Numerous roads
• Two bridges
• Airstrip
• Landfill, contaminated snow facility, and landfarm
• Foundations systems for all the buildings and facilities

Tetra Tech also developed the tailings management system, water management system, and associated designs for the retention structures. The work included design development and construction management for tailings retention structures to separate solids from water within cells and unique water retention dams with a frozen core and foundation of permafrost gravel.

In addition, Tetra Tech assisted in the development of the initial Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project and the subsequent EIA for the addition of three more pits into the mine plan. Tetra Tech was involved in the public hearings during the initial and subsequent permitting stages of the project.
