Development of the territories, dialogue with the communities and sustainability, the themes of the 3rd day of the Latin American Mining Encounter

Representatives of mining organizations and unions in the region provided details of the industry's contribution to the development of their nations and highlighted not only the economic contributions derived from extraction, but also those perceived by the productive chains generated by the activity. The specialists agreed on the need to think as a region at a time when international investments are required, in that sense, coordinated articulation and seeing neighbors more as partners than competitors, would help improve competitiveness, which would attract increased capital, increased value chains and development and innovation for sustainable mining that allows governments to reach new markets and be suppliers of the minerals of today and of the greener future.
 
On the other hand, in the panel "Competitiveness and sustainability of the regions", in which delegates from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile participated, the importance of establishing transparent dialogue spaces in which all those involved in the projects (Government, companies, communities) make their interests known and define co-responsibility and partnership for their development. Along these lines, Wilfredo Bacián, representative of the Quechua indigenous community of Quipisca in Chile, mentioned that despite the conflicts that a mining operation can generate, it is possible to reach agreements if the companies prioritize the recognition of the communities in the area of ​​influence. , respect its history, its cultural - natural heritage and aim for sustainable practices with high social and environmental standards.
 
In this sense, the company of Antioquia origin Mineros SA presented how through its higher purpose: the Well-being of all, it makes its commitment to carry out responsible and sustainable mining a reality focused on leaving a legacy that contributes to the growth of the communities. The presentation included   the contribution of 57,071 in carbon credits and royalties and taxes for 22,718 million pesos for the Nation. The work carried out in this region of the country is vital since it generates 25% of the jobs in the entire Bajo Cauca Antioqueño and 43% of the total employment in the municipality of El Bagre.
 
Additionally, the National Mining Agency presented the process of defining a Strategic Mining Area as a mechanism that can attract investments in exploration and exploitation, contemplating social investments and additional economic compensation for royalties, which could provide important resources for the Nation and the territories, contributing to the economic reactivation of the country.

The last day of this regional conversation will begin tomorrow at 8:00 am with the Expert Meetings, where representatives of the sector will address topics such as purposeful innovation and mining 4.0; best practices in waste management and   new times in mining, focused on women, work and training.
 
Later, at 10:00 am, the meeting of unions and organizations will be held, in which representatives of Colombia, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Panama will present their points of view on the development of mining. in the countries of the Latin American region.
 
The closing of the event will be led by Juan Camilo Nariño, president of the Colombian Mining Association, who will present the main conclusions of the event and together with Silvana Habib, ELAMI 2021 manager, will formulate a Latin American agenda for mining .
