Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) with Slurry Pumps

Aug 14, 2015
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is a common industrial process in the twenty-first century, although its original development dates back to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The first major FGD unit was installed at London’s Battersea Park at Swansea Power Station in 1931. Technology has evolved and improved since that time, and today there are hundreds of FGD circuits around the globe with the majority of units installed in North America and Europe.

Schurco Slurry pumps play an integral part in the FGD circuit from pumping lime slurry through the primary scrubbing process, sludge pumping to clarifiers, and finally pumping bottom ash and other ash products out of the circuit and into waste disposal ponds or containment areas. All of these processes require varying pump design and material applications. Some processes such as the lime circuits begin as a high-alkaline process, whereas much of the ash service becomes highly acidic requiring specialty alloys and sealing technologies.

Schurco Slurry has delivered pumping systems into each of these applications, and through cradle-to-grave life-cycle studies has developed many application driven solutions for this vital and growing industrial sector.
