(3/28/14) ― When Alfred Nobel is remembered by historians, the great inventor was a business genius most often known for the invention of dynamite and the Nobel Prizes. Thursday, March 27, Kentucky state and local dignitaries recognized a local achievement that would have made Nobel very proud.

The Graham Dyno Nobel operation achieved what few companies have ― 1,000,000 hours without a lost-time accident or illness at the facility. The company is part of an international company that is a global leader in commercial explosives.

Rocky Comito, Deputy Secretary of the Kentucky Labor Cabinet, presented the award to Jim Jarvis, site manager for Dyno Nobel’s Graham operation. Comito praised Dyno Nobel’s commitment to a safe work environment.

“The phrase zero harm for everyone, everywhere is more than a motto for Dyno Nobel," Cornito said. "It’s a way of conducting business that this company obviously takes very seriously.”

Dyno Nobel has a rich history in the field of explosives, which is an industry that requires an extremely high level of attention to safety.

Dyno Nobel site manager Jim Jarvis, told SurfKY News that safety is, without a doubt, the most important factor at the plant.

“If we go through a day without an injury, we consider that a good day,” Jarvis said. “Of course we’re in business to make a product and make a profit, but employee safety is the ultimate goal.”

Joe Clark, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for the site, added that safety is always the No. 1 factor on everyone’s mind, everyday.

“Safety is the number one items we concentrate on not just daily,” Clark said. “We have safety meetings daily, weekly and on a monthly basis as well.”

Jarvis noted that safety is stressed from the very top down.

“James Fazzino, CEO of the company, calls himself 'the chief safety officer', and is very passionate about safety,” said Jarvis.

Jarvis noted that Dyno Nobel does much of it’s hiring in Muhlenberg and surrounding counties, and Dyno Nobel has two factories on site.

“We produce PTFE, the abbreviated term for a chemical known as polytetrafluroroethylen,” Jarvis said. "It is used world-wide to make detonators and we are the only PTFE manufacturer in North America. We produce several millions of pounds per year.”

Jarvis also noted that Dyno Nobel’s Graham plant also makes hundreds of millions of feet of detonating cords in the facility’s other on-site plant.

"Plus, right now, we have a contract to produce the device that will open the tip of a rocket that will set a satellite into orbit," Jarvis said.

With 3,000 employees worldwide, Dyno Nobel has more than 2,800 patents.
