HAVE YOUR SAY: Arnprior company could save flooded homes

Jun 4, 2020

An Arnprior business may have a solution to save homes from future spring flooding.

Triodetic, a subsidiary of Plaintree Systems in the town’s industrial park, makes a “multipoint foundation” from steel or aluminum rods connecting to specially-designed connector poles. They’ve built the floating foundations for flood zone customers from as far away as San Francisco and are in talks with others as near as Mississippi Lake. Lawrence Morroni sees it as a solution for what could be a recurring phenomenon along the Ottawa and other area rivers.

“Yes. Absolutely. We can look at flooding issues here,” said Morroni, Triodetic sales and marketing manager. “For sure, it’s not for everybody. The fact is a lot of people are going to have to relocate. But we can do it. We design and manufacture everything here. Nothing is outsourced.”

Triodetic is partnering with an area company to lift houses, cottages and other buildings that the foundation will go on, but besides that it can do the rest for about $17 per square foot. Often it takes just three days to complete, Morroni said.

They can do similar work in swampy areas of the U.S. deep south where expensive piles are driven deep underground. However, Triodetic developed its reputation in securing buildings on permafrost in the far north.

The multipoint foundations could play a part in brownfield fill-ins too.

Other solutions floated include rubber or plastic tubes around homes that fill up with water (or air) during flooding to block river water. For many who have spent weeks on end filling sandbags and lining walls – and are now preparing to dismantle – both solutions might seem preferable.
