HGTV Star Headlines Parents As Career Coaches Event at Cambrian College

May 12, 2021
SUDBURY – Teenagers may want to hang out with their friends, but they rely on their parents and guardians for advice, especially when it comes to where to go to college.

With that in mind, Cambrian College is welcoming parents/guardians and their children between grades 7-12 to attend Parents as Career Coaches, Thursday, May 27th, at 6 p.m. This is a free, interactive, virtual workshop, presented on Zoom.

“We recognize that parents are very influential when it comes to the post-secondary plans of their children,” says Mary-Liz Warwick, Cambrian’s Student Success and Transition Navigator. “Our goal for this event is to provide parents with some tools to help guide their children to the right program which will lead to a meaningful career. Parents want what’s best for their children and we’re here to help!”

This year’s keynote speaker is Paul Lafrance.  Paul is the host of HGTV’s Home to Win, Custom Built, Decked Out, Disaster Decks, and Deck Wars, as well as one of the judges on Canada’s Handyman Challenge.  He is also a musician, the CEO and founder of the international design company, Paul Lafrance Design, and the father of four daughters.

His address is called “How to succeed when you don’t fit the mould.”

Joining Paul Lafrance as a speaker is Colleen Heidman, a Digital Recruiter with Cambrian College. Colleen is a Cambrian graduate, with an advanced diploma in Business Administration and Human Resources Management. Colleen’s two daughters are also recent Cambrian graduates, so she has first-hand experience as a parent guiding teenagers through their career choices and education pathways.

The Parents as Career Coaches Lecture Series is a presentation of Cambrian College, the Rainbow District School Board, The Sudbury Catholic District School Board, The School College Work Initiative, and the Ontario Post-secondary Access & Inclusion Program (OPAIP).

Cambrian College is Northern Ontario’s largest college, with more than 80 programs. Cambrian’s main campus is in Greater Sudbury, with satellite centres in Espanola and Little Current. For more information about Cambrian College, visit www.cambriancollege.ca
