HOW TO CHANGE THE HOSTS FILE

May 5, 2020
SolidWorks Network clients and PDM clients are normally set up to connect to the server using the system host name. The host names are resolved to IP addresses. The client will not be able to connect if there is a mismatch between the server host and the IP.

There is way to link the hostname with an IP address on the client side. The “Hosts” file in windows is used to link hostnames to IP address. The procedure is the following:

1. Run Notepad as an administrator. You can use any other plain text or code editor as notepad++.

2. File >> Open: Navigate to the Hosts file. Normally located under: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\

3. From the extentions dropdown, select: ALL FILES

4. Select the file: “hosts” and click open.

5. Add a new line at the end of the file with the IP and the server name. The format is: IP+SPACE+HOSTNAME.

192.168.0.100 SERVERNAME

6. Save the hosts file and close notepad.
