INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY SERIES – CARA ROSEN AND LEONELA DELGADO

Mar 25, 2021

Leonela Delgado and Cara Rosen speak about breaking down assumptions and building credibility during their careers

Joining Orica as a graduate, Cara Rosen worked across different business functions to develop a deep understanding of the business. In 2016, she transferred from her office-based rotations to technical services – finding a drive and passion for the field and a career pathway she knew would fulfill her long-term.

Now six years later, Cara’s current role as Orica’s US Technical Services Manager sees her providing support and direction to a team of technical services engineers across the US. The team, who use technologies and explosives expertise to predict, measure and optimise blast outcomes, are helping create safer and more efficient blasting environments across the industry. Working hard to create a sense of openness and support in her team, Cara believes this is key to building respectful and efficient teams.

“I strive to bring empathy, trust and open curiosity to my interactions with other people. It reinforces a positive culture, and really helps promote better questions that challenge bias, assumptions and behaviours that have a negative impact on diversity and inclusion progressions.”

Cara believes open, unbiased communication can go a long way in breaking down barriers and assumptions, however backing up your words with action is also important.

“When I started in the industry, one of the biggest challenges I faced were the unspoken assumptions – ‘women don’t want to get dirty’ or ‘we’re not tough enough for the environment’. To overcome these, it was all about me showing up authentically – demonstrating a passion for my work and a willingness to learn, make mistakes and grow.”

Cara credits her career success, in part, to some of the influential leaders and mentors she has had along the way.

“There are several leaders who play an integral part in my growth. Everything from opening doors for professional opportunities, to providing a space to be vulnerable and unsure. These leaders have helped me challenge and break through my own unspoken assumptions about my capabilities – which allowed me to grow, I really can’t thank them enough.”

Cara’s advice for those coming into the industry? Culture and communication are key.

“Our culture starts with us, and our conversations and behaviours today will strengthen the inclusive workplace of tomorrow. Never stop the conversation to challenge bias, assumptions and behaviours, and always make sure your actions back your words.”

As an open cut coal mine Team Leader based in Mexico, Leonela Delgado manages blast activities, including blast plans, reviews of blast areas and the operational logistics involved in the blast event. In a traditionally male dominated area, Leonela believes it's crucial to never let anyone pre-judge your capabilities.

“I make sure that I never let anyone make assumptions about what I can do or accomplish. It’s important to be confident in your abilities, show up and be assertive, but also make sure you open up lines of communication and let everyone share ideas and be part of the conversation.”

Leonela has worked hard to gain credibility and respect throughout her career, and she credits this to her unwavering belief in herself and what she can accomplish.

“Sometimes people make assumptions about me and what I can achieve, but I overcome this by speaking with confidence, not second guessing my decisions and never, ever being quiet. If I see something, I call it out, and this is really important – particularly when it comes to diversity and inclusion in a workplace.

“We can learn so much from others and their experiences, so I really believe respect is key when looking to create a safe space and instigate conversations around inclusion and diversity.”
