JMC Yamana Gold is the first mining company in Brazil to participate in the Canadian standard sustainability program

May 19, 2021
The JMC Yamana Gold is the first Brazilian mining company to participate in the sustainability standard developed by the Canadian Mining Association (Mining Association of Canada- MAC). The Canadian Mining Association's 'Towards Sustainable Mining' - TSM or 'Towards Sustainable Mining' program is a globally recognized sustainability program that supports mining companies in managing important environmental and social risks. The implementation process takes about three years and Yamana has already completed the first year, which consists of meeting several basic requirements and self-assessments for its units in South America, including the Jacobina operations. There is a work schedule in progress for the activities foreseen in the next steps.

“Being sustainable is a premise for working in the mining industry today. Yamana has very intense programs focused on the sector's sustainability and this is a big step for us to continue working with high performance, safety and socio-environmental responsibility. Our actions aim to reflect a set of values that we share with our employees and communities, including honesty, transparency and integrity ”, says Ivan Rigoletto, director of Health, Safety and Sustainability at Yamana.

Yamana Gold joins the program on a voluntary basis. “Participating in TSM goes beyond legal requirements and strengthens the ongoing commitment to corporate sustainability practices and indicators for mining companies”, reinforces Rigoletto. The Ibram is already in talks to bring the TSM program for its members in Brazil.

The rational use of natural resources is a premise for the development of business in the municipality of Jacobina. The reuse of water in all company processes, the recycling of organic waste with the implementation of a composting plant in partnership with a local cooperative, the control of air pollution through specific programs for this purpose, in addition to ensuring the well -being of the biota and of the communities that live in the vicinity of the mining company are part of their daily lives, according to the company.

Since 2012, the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Socioambiental has existed, with the objective of strengthening and further increasing the reach of programs aimed at society and the environment. The creation of the institute was based on the consolidation and the excellent results of the educational, social, environmental and cultural actions, through which thousands of people were benefited.
