Keep your kids engaged in minerals literacy with activities from Mining Matters

May 13, 2020
Schools are closed. Park are off limits. And physical interaction with anyone other than those in your household is limited to brief hellos from across the driveway. These are unprecedented times and we have no way of knowing when life will return to a sense of normalcy.

While many are struggling to find ways to add variety to their children’s learning, Mining Matters is committed to keeping education alive. Parents and children can find a wealth educational resources at MiningMatters.ca. With a focus on Earth science, resources include the Mining Matters Activity Book, which is filled with puzzles and games that teach about the mining process, safety equipment worn by geologists, and more. Children can learn about the rock cycle as they follow along with the Starburst® Rock Cycle activity featured in our latest version of groundWORK, a publication geared toward educators. You can also sign up to watch video tutorials that teach you how to do activities on topics like erosion, reclamation and the physical properties of minerals.

In honour of virtual Mining Week celebrations across Canada this spring, Mining Matters has also compiled a series of Mining Week Activities that teachers and parents can easily do with the kids.

If you’re starting to catch cabin fever, Mining Matters suggests getting outside and going on a rock walk. Pick up some nice stones and turn them into crafts.

Grab the kids and try something new with these exciting activities.
