MAPEI to help judge the 2021 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race

Feb 2, 2021
Laval, Québec – MAPEI Inc. is pleased to announce that our very own John Jansen will be one of the judges of the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), now running in its 47th consecutive year. Although 2021’s event is all-virtual due to ongoing restrictions on public gatherings, engineering students from across Canada will still be able to compete for the best design and construction from February 3rd through 7th. Info: https://www.gnctr2021.ca/

Due to trade-welder working restrictions and varying levels of access to school labs and facilities across Canada, organizers said they were not asking teams to physically create their toboggans this year. However, they are expecting a full technical report and presentations as if they were going to build the toboggan for competition.

“We are lucky to have past spirit judges and spirit captains as part of our Organizing Committee. These individuals will create the 2021 spirit challenges and act as spirit judges in this unprecedented year,” they said in a statement on their website: www.gnctr2021.ca.

MAPEI is proud to be a legacy supporter of Canada’s budding concrete engineers, and we look forward to the possibility of seeing a true race again when the 2022 edition returns to Calgary, Alberta. In the meantime, good luck to all entrants!

About GNCTR

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest and longest running Canadian undergraduate Engineering Competition. Celebrating it’s 47th year in 2021, GNCTR will be slightly different than the usual competition. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual competition will be held in 2021. GNCTR will be returning to it’s founding province of Alberta when it comes to Calgary in February 2-5, 2022. GNCTR is a multidisciplinary challenge, where teams must construct a toboggan that can safely hold five riders with concrete running surfaces, fully functional steering and braking systems, a completely enclosed roll cage, and weigh less than 350lbs.
