IMERYS PERFORMANCE MINERALS AMERICAS LAUNCHES HARBORLITE 900S-SG TARGETING THE BIODIESEL PRODUCTION INDUSTRY

(ROSWELL, GA, USA, February 11, 2021) - Imerys Performance Americas, a part of Imerys - the world’s leading supplier of mineral-based solutions for industry, announces the launch of Harborlite™ 900S-SG, a perlite mineral filter aid that can be modified for sterol glucoside removal in cold soak biodiesel production.

Sterol Glucosides (SG), found even at low concentrations in the final production of biodiesel, can cause production batches to fail ASTM cold soak testing. Using existing biodiesel filtration systems with Harborlite 900S-SG as a drop-in filter aid significantly enhances end product results regarding sterol glucoside removal.

 

Even biodiesel production plants that use soy or canola oil feedstocks to produce biodiesel can benefit from Harborlite 900S-SG by managing the cold soak process at higher temperatures versus lower temperatures needed with conventional filter aids (up to 20o Fahrenheit with similar SG removal in tests). The benefit of not needing lower chilling temperatures can result in reduced chilling process times and substantial energy cost savings.

 

In production processes where cold soak chilling steps are not required, flexibility is added by allowing removal of sterol glucosides at much higher temperatures during summer months, leading to higher first pass quality and a reduced need for blending off.
