Siemens to supply industrial gas turbines for gas processing facility in Alberta, Canada

Jan 17, 2019
• First application of an SGT-300 gas turbine in Canada
• Non-enclosed SGT-300 package will be used for power generation service

Siemens was recently selected to supply two SGT-300 industrial gas turbines for an established Montney producer in Alberta, Canada. The equipment order, placed by the customer’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm, marks the first application of an SGT-300 turbine in Canada.

The gas processing plant will help support production growth for the customer in the Grande Prairie Region, located northeast of Edmonton, and will be built alongside the company’s existing dehydration and compression facility. When completed in 2020, the plant will provide the customer with an additional 50 million cubic feet per day of natural gas processing capacity and 30,000 barrels per day of condensate stabilization capacity.

The two SGT-300 industrial gas turbines, which will share 12 megawatts of power generation, met all project requirements and will be used to drive compressors at the facility. The SGT-300 is a robust, proven gas turbine used in power generation and mechanical drive applications throughout the world. It’s most renowned for its use in the oil and gas industry, offering a compact arrangement, easy on-site maintainability, and reliability.

The turbine package for the gas plant will feature a non-enclosed design, allowing the plant-wide fire detection and suppression system to ensure worker safety throughout the facility. It will also provide open access for maintenance and visual inspections.

“The SGT-300 unit was a logical choice for this project, given its high efficiency, innovative dry low emissions combustion system, and more than 4.5 million hours of operating experience worldwide,” said Matthew Chinn, Executive Vice President of New Equipment Solutions Worldwide for Siemens. “These features will ultimately minimize operational and
maintenance costs for the customer over the life of the plant.”

The two SGT-300 units are expected to be delivered in late summer 2019, just 10 months after the initial order was placed. Commissioning is expected in autumn 2019.

“Siemens Canada is thrilled to provide two SGT300 gas turbines to a customer in Western Canada. Siemens gas turbines continue to be a preferred choice for a wide range of oil and gas applications across northwest Canada,” said Arne Wohlschlegel, Vice President, Power and Gas, Siemens Canada Limited. “This will be the first application of the SGT-300 in Canada and we look forward to working with the customer and their EPC to support future production growth throughout the Grande Prairie Region.”
