Conoce a Martín Zevallos, nuestro experto en Linatex® para México (Meet Martín Zevallos, our Linatex® Expert for Mexico)

Aug 16, 2020

For nearly a hundred years, Linatex® rubber has outlasted the competition time and again in the only proving ground that matters - mines around the world.

We spoke with Martín Zevallos, our Linatex ® process engineer in Monterrey, Mexico, to discuss how Linatex ® rubber products are maximizing mine uptime for Weir Minerals customers in Mexico and South America.

How did your journey with Linatex ® rubber products begin?
I worked with another rubber wear coating company at Vulco Peru SA before it was acquired by Weir Group. I have spent the last 22 years installing rubber liners in mines and am fortunate to have had the opportunity to gain experience manufacturing conduit, pipe, tanks, chutes and hoses, as well as Vulco® mill lining systems. .

Working with all these different applications has given me a good appreciation for the best materials and ways to apply them in each situation. Linatex ® rubber products are fantastic to work with , rubber is so flexible and easy to apply, and as a process engineer, I really appreciate how versatile and tough it is. It's a big part of why I love working at Weir Minerals.

What are some of the challenges faced by mines in Mexico and what Linatex ® rubber products help you overcome them?
Unlike some regions where one type of mineral dominates, Mexico has a fairly diverse mining landscape. Most mines process a variety of minerals, including gold, silver, zinc, copper, lead, and molybdenum, which means that it is very important for customers to understand the different wear caused by different mineral sources to ensure their equipment achieve optimal service life.

Linatex ® premium rubber has been a cornerstone of mining in Mexico since it was introduced in the late 1980s and continues to be the wear material of choice for most applications. I believe that one of the ways we provide the greatest value to customers is by identifying areas where one of our synthetic rubber compounds, such as Linard ® HD60 or Linagard ® NBR , will be most profitable.

That is why one of the most important things we do at Weir Minerals is to locate our experts in service centers close to our customers' mines, to ensure they work closely with the customer and develop a deep understanding of the conditions in the mine. This knowledge is extremely valuable when it comes to specifying the optimal material to reduce maintenance or solve wear problems in the most abrasive areas of the circuit.

An example of this is the work we did with a copper mine in Cananea, Sonora, where we identified a section of rubber hose that performed poorly and lasted less than a year between replacements. By switching to Linatex ® premium rubber , it effectively concentrates the impacts of copper particles without breaking, tripling their useful life. Our Linatex ® hoses continue to perform well after more than three years in continuous operation.

What is the Linatex ® rubber project you are most proud to have worked on?
I think one of the best projects I've been a part of was supporting a gold and silver mine a few years ago, whose discharge chute from the SAG mill was not achieving a good life. It had steel bars, which were failing and turning into metal particles in the feed.

We analyzed the situation and decided that 1 inch of rubber would absorb the impact without breaking. Four years later, the original rubber continues to perform well and has eliminated this trapped metal source, making it an excellent and simple solution that shows exactly what our Linatex ® rubber can do .

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for our customers to reduce their operating costs by using Linatex® rubber products?
Our rubber products include a wide variety of materials that can be used in different situations, which is a great advantage for our customers. All of these products can be ordered based on project requirements: Linatex ® premium rubber for excellent resilience, Linard ® range synthetic rubbers for heavy duty applications such as hoppers and impact liners, and the Linagard ® range of rubber products for corrosive products or high temperature applications.

Linatex ® mining hoses are another great opportunity for customers who are struggling to achieve optimal service life from rubber lined spools and pipes in the plant. In addition to the excellent properties of Linatex ® rubber , the geometric flexibility of our hoses often allows us to dramatically reduce the harshest impact angles of slurries, which can really improve wear life.

For almost a hundred years, Linatex ® rubber has outlasted the competition time and time again in the only testing ground that matters - mine sites across the globe.

We sat down with Martín Zevallos, our Linatex ® Process Engineer in Monterrey, Mexico to talk about how Linatex ® rubber products are maximizing mine uptime for Weir Minerals customers throughout Mexico and South America.

How did your journey with Linatex ® rubber products begin?
I actually worked with another rubber wear lining at Vulco Peru SA before it was acquired by the Weir Group. I've spent the last 22 years installing rubber linings on mine sites, and I'm lucky to have had the chance to gain experience in ducts, pipes, tanks, chutes and hose manufacturing, as well as the Vulco ® mill lining systems .

Working with all these different applications has given me a good appreciation for the best materials and ways to apply them for each situation. Linatex ® rubber products are fantastic to work with, the rubber is so flexible and easy to apply, and as a Process Engineer, I really appreciate just how versatile and resilient it is. It's a big part of why I love working at Weir Minerals.

Unlike some regions where one kind of mineral dominates, Mexico has quite a diverse mining landscape. Most mines process a variety of minerals, including gold, silver, zinc, copper, lead and molybdenum, which means that it's very important for customers to understand the different wear caused by different mineral feeds to ensure their equipment achieves optimum wear life.

Linatex ® premium rubber has been a cornerstone of mining in Mexico since it was introduced in the late 80's and remains the wear material of choice for most applications. I think one of the ways we provide the most value for customers is identifying areas where one of our synthetic rubber compounds, such as Linard ® HD60 or Linagard ® NBR , will be more cost effective.

An example of this is the work we did with a copper mine in Cananea, Sonora, where we identified a section of rubber hose which was underperforming and lasting less than a year between replacement. By switching to Linatex® premium rubber, which could effectively absorb the impacts of the copper particles without tearing, we more than tripled its wear life. Our Linatex ® hoses are still going strong after more than three years of continuous operation.

What's the Linatex ® rubber project you're most proud to have worked on?
I think one of the best projects I've ever been a part of was supporting a gold and silver mine a few years ago, whose SAG mill discharge chute wasn't achieving a good wear life. It had steel bars, which were failing and becoming tramp metal in the feed.

Where do you see the most opportunities for our customers to reduce their operating costs using Linatex ® rubber products?
Our sheet rubber products include a wide variety of materials which can be used in different situations, which is a great advantage for our customers. All of these products can be called upon depending on the projects requirements: Linatex ® premium rubber for excellent resilience, the Linard ® range of synthetic rubbers for heavy duty applications such as chute and impact lining, and the Linagard ® range of rubber products for corrosive or high temperature applications.

Genuine Linatex ® mining hoses are another great opportunity for customers who're having trouble achieving optimum wear life from rubber lined spools and piping in the plant. In addition to the excellent properties of Linatex ® rubber, the geometric flexibility of our hoses often allows us to dramatically reduce the harsher impact angles of the slurry which can really improve the wear life.
