Hydreological

Aug 29, 2013
Understanding the relationship between environment and human activities is the underlying principle of hydrogeology. As one of the many services offered by Canadian Shield Consultants Agency Inc., a hydrogeological review is included with our larger sewage system designs and application packages.

Not commonly required in the past, the implementation of performance based building code and stringent review for ground or surface water approvals, the hydrogeological assessment is quickly becoming a valuable tool for prospective developers or large scale operators. The hydrogeological evaluation provides scientific based support for assessing existing or potential impacts on the environment, ground or surface water. Currently in the province of Ontario, the mandate of most provincial ministries includes statutes specifically intended to prevent the further degradation of all natural features.

The hydrogeological review examines:
Specific site conditions affecting the operation
Drainage
Soils – specific types and depths
Groundwater supplies – quantity and quality
Relationship between specific activities and the natural ecosystem, surface or ground water supplies

Non-specific conditions such as:
• Neighbouring property uses
• Topography of surrounding area
Identification of potential off-site hazards (ie. chemical storage or use)

Hydrogeological studies are useful for specific types of projects such as:
• Nutrient Management
• Biosolids Disposal
• Large Scale Sewage Systems
• Aggregate Resources
• Subdivision and
• Landfill Operations

The use of environmental modeling or calculations are incorporated into the data interpretation of the field work to provide a comprehensive evaluation for the client.

As reflected in many of the provincial ministry mandates, the importance of sound planning and development monitoring is becoming more and more a requirement as opposed to “value added” planning. If you are interested in learning more about this service, please contact us.
