SONAMI ADHERES TO THE BLUE CERTIFIED CLEAN PRODUCTION AGREEMENT

Mar 23, 2021

On World Water Day, the Government and unions signed a voluntary Agreement to promote and strengthen corporate water management, as well as reduce the water footprint, in Chilean productive sectors.

There are more than 150 companies interested, from the agricultural, mining, processed food industry, commerce, wines, retail, fishing, technology and health sectors, in participating in this initiative that opens its accession process on April 26.

The Clean Production Agreement "Blue Certificate", of public-private management promoted by the Agency for Sustainability and Climate Change of Corfo and Fundación Chile, will allow to articulate actions with companies from different sectors of the national economy around the integral and sustainable management of water resources in production and service processes, within a maximum period of 36 months to obtain the maximum level of certification.

Through seven specific goals, which involve the use of tools associated with the measurement of the water footprint, information management and social responsibility of water, prioritizing priorities and encouraging the necessary investment, it also seeks to improve the efficiency, productivity and environmental performance of companies, allowing them to position themselves as responsible, resilient and committed to their environment.

The signing of the voluntary agreement had the participation of Javier Naranjo, Undersecretary of the Environment, the vice president of Corfo, Pablo Terrazas, the Swiss ambassador, Arno Wiki; the executive director of the Agency for Sustainability and Climate Change, Giovanni Calderón; the Superintendent of the Environment, Cristóbal de la Maza, the general manager of Fundación Chile, Marcos Kulka; the president of the National Society of Agriculture, Ricardo Ariztía; the president of SONAMI, Diego Hernández, the general director of Prochile, Jorge O'Ryan, and Gonzalo Bachelet, vice president of Chilealimentos.

The Blue Certificate is based on two principles: gradualism and collaboration. All companies, regardless of their size, can be part of this challenge, progressively. Also, companies can support their suppliers to improve water management.

Through this instrument, companies also commit to implement a shared value plan in the territories in which they are located, related to the impacts of the water footprint.

Participating in the voluntary agreement are the Ministry of the Environment, the Superintendency of the Environment, the General Water Directorate, INDAP, Corfo, Prochile, the Agency for Sustainability and Climate Change, Chilealimentos, Sofofa, Asimet, the National Society of Agriculture and the National Society of Mining.
