The Starter Company - Summer Intake 2015

Apr 5, 2015
The Starter Company program provides mentoring, training, and the opportunity for capital for youth who start, grow, or buy a small business. For the purposes of this program, youth are defined as those between the ages of 18 and 29. While the program is targeted to young adults, absolutely anyone is welcome to enroll in the workshops and benefit from the consultations and mentoring.

The target audience for this program is youth with a start-up idea who have not yet developed (or fully developed) their business plan.

Starter Company provides:
• Training and business skills to help youth prepare to run their own business;
• Advice and mentorship from local business leaders to help get the business up and running;
• Experience running a business that will better position youth to obtain more traditional financing, such as a bank loan, if required; and,
• Where applicable and eligible, a micro-grant of up to $5000 to kick-off a new business or expand an existing business. Note that eligible participants can apply for the grant; however not all grant applicants will receive a grant.

Participants will work with the Business Enterprise Centre to create a business plan with performance milestones. For this intake, the program is based around a series of workshops with support activities (consultations and mentoring) occurring for as long as needed. The first of these workshops is scheduled for June 23rd, 2015 in Timmins. The participants will be required to participate in all workshops followed by "homework" where they will apply the information learned to their own business plan. Participants will meet regularly with the Business Development Consultant for one-on-one counseling and help with their business plan, and will also schedule meetings with their assigned mentor. By the end of programming, participants should have completed their business plan.

Note that this intake's workshops will be conducted in English, with support resources offered in both English and French. Future workshops may be conducted in French if there is sufficient interest. The workshops will also be offered online, so entrepreneurs throughout northeastern Ontario are encouraged to participate.
