Vale announces a donation of 50 million syringes to fight Covid-19

Feb 26, 2021
Vale will donate 50 million syringes to the Ministry of Health to support immunization efforts against Covid-19 in the country. The first batches, with a total of two million syringes, are expected to arrive in Brazil in March and April and the remaining 48 million ones by June. The inputs, which are in accordance with Anvisa's (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) specifications, were purchased from China, a country with which the company has a partnership of almost 50 years. With this, Vale hopes to contribute so that there is a sufficient number of syringes for vaccination of Brazilians. The initiative is part of a new humanitarian aid package of the company to fight the pandemic in the country.

"Based on the dialogue with the Health Ministry, we are committed to make this fundamental input available to vaccinate the population and help the Brazilian society to overcome this pandemic", says Vale's CEO, Eduardo Bartolomeo. He recalls that this action is in line with the company's strategic pillar New Pact with Society. "Our determination is to donate all inputs to the country to support the population against Covid-19".

Vale has also bought and is donating 280,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Ministry of Health for the protection of vaccination frontline workers. There will be 120 thousand masks, 40 thousand gloves and 120 thousand aprons, with expected delivery for early March. The Ministry of Health will be responsible for the distribution of all items (PPE and syringes).

Butantan Institute - The company is also supporting the Butantan Institute in the conclusion of the works to expand the Multi-Purpose Center for Vaccine Production (CPMV), which will have a production capacity of up to 100 million doses per year. In addition to the vaccine against Covid-19, the unit may also produce other immunizers manufactured in Butantan. The center, which will occupy an area of 10,000 m², is expected to be ready by September this year, at a total cost of R$ 160 million, of which R$ 10 million donated by Vale.

The company approved a total of US$ 15 million (approximately R$ 80 million, at an exchange rate of R$ 5.40) for humanitarian aid actions against COVID-19 this year. In addition to syringes and PPE, the package also provides support to municipalities in the regions where we operate to face the pandemic. Vale is donating 36 thousand cubic meters of oxygen to the government of Pará, 8 multiparameter monitors, 16 infusion pumps and 20 manual beds for Marabá, in addition to renewing an agreement with the Acqua Institute to hire health professionals, who will work in the wing of the General Hospital of Parauapebas, renovated in 2020 exclusively for the treatment of patients with Covid-19.

"Attentive to the needs of the territories where we operate, we are repeating the war operation that we set up last year with logistics to import the inputs to help the country in the pandemic", says Vale's executive director of Sustainability, Communication and Institutional Relations, Luiz Eduardo Osorio.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March last year, Vale has been offering humanitarian aid to fight Covid-19. Last year, the company allocated more than R$ 500 million for the purchase and donation of 5 million rapid test kits and almost 16 million PPE to the Ministry of Health, in addition to other actions, such as the construction of field hospitals, health units and equipment acquisition in the states where the company operates.
