About Syncrude

• Syncrude is one of the largest producers of crude oil from Canada's oil sands. We operate a large oil sand mine, utilities plant, bitumen extraction plant and upgrading facility that processes bitumen and produces value-added light, sweet crude oil for domestic consumption and export. We call our product Syncrude Crude Oil (SCO).
• In 2011, we produced 105.3 million barrels of Syncrude Crude Oil. We currently have the capacity to supply 15% of the nation’s petroleum requirements.
• We are the largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people in Canada. Aboriginal people make up over 8% of our employee workforce. Syncrude has conducted more than $1.7 billion in business with Aboriginal companies since 1992.
• Syncrude is one of the largest private sector employers in Alberta, employing around 5,500 people directly and an average of 1,000-1,500 maintenance contractor employees. Our operations provide jobs for 14,000 people directly and indirectly across Canada.
• Over the last five years, we have invested more than $325 million on oil sands research and development projects. More than half of these expenditures are focused on environmental research.
• We operate one of the largest private-sector research programs in Western Canada and are one of the top 50 R&D spenders in Canada.
• The Syncrude Project results in substantial returns to the people of Canada and Alberta, including royalty payments, and federal and provincial taxes, exceeding $14 billion to date. In 2011, we spent $3.9 billion on the purchase of goods and services.
• To date, Syncrude has reclaimed over 3,100 hectares of land disturbed by oil sands mining operations, with another 1,200 ready for revegetation. We have planted over 6 million tree and shrub seedlings.
• In 2008, Syncrude was the first company in the Canadian oil sands industry to receive certification from the Alberta Government for a reclaimed area. Called Gateway Hill, the area was planted in the early 1980s and is now a healthy forest of broad leaf and needle leaf trees interspersed by several wetlands.
• Our corporate headquarters are located in the city of Fort McMurray, 440 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Our Mildred • Lake facility is 40 kilometres north of the city, with our Aurora project located an additional 35 kilometres north of Mildred Lake. Our operations are found on the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.
• The Syncrude Project is a Joint Venture undertaking among Canadian Oil Sands Partnership #1, Imperial Oil Resources, Mocal • Energy Limited, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., Nexen Oil Sands Partnership, Sinopec Oil Sands Partnership and Suncor Energy Ventures Partnership, as the project owners, and Syncrude as the project operator.
