Voisey Bay Mine
Owner: Vale Inco
Operator: Voisey's Bay Nickel Company Ltd

The Voisey's Bay development involves the operation of a mine, concentrator, and a processing plant in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Operations at the mine and concentrator at Voisey's Bay began in 2005. During operations, the mine and concentrator employs about 450 people. Pending the results of an underground exploration program, development of an underground mine and expansion of the concentrator would begin around 2018. We estimate then an additional 350 people will be employed at the mine and concentrator, increasing total employment there to 800.

At Argentia, Vale operated a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant to confirm the technological and commercial application of hydrometallurgical technology for Voisey's Bay concentrate. The plant became operational in October 2005 and closed in June 2008.

Operations of the demonstration plant is being followed by the construction and operation of a hydrometallurgical processing plant at Long Harbour, Newfoundland that will process the concentrate from Voisey's Bay to a finished nickel product. Operations at the Long Harbour Processing Plant is expected to employ about 475 people. Vale has committed that the processing plant will be completed by February 2013.

A variety of employment and procurement opportunities will be available through the operations phase of the Voisey's Bay development. Individuals and businesses interested in pursuing such opportunities should visit the Employment and Procurement sections of our website for current information.
