The Henkel PSA Academy Europe is an in-depth training course taking place in the facilities of Henkel locations. Most mornings include theoretical teaching from Henkel technical service experts. In the afternoons, the participants will do hands-on training in our technical center and laboratories.

All teachers of the PSA Academy are highly qualified experts in the field of adhesive technologies. They are recognized industry experts and dispose of the ability to convey both theoretical and practical knowledge on the topic of Pressure Sensitive Adhesives.

Seismic Processing Advances for Reservoir Characterization Workshop

Seismic data plays a crucial role in reservoir characterization. At the basic level, it can be used to map the geological structures away from wells. In addition, quantitative seismic reservoir characterization workflows aim to extract reservoir properties from seismic data to identify sweet spots for exploration and appraisal drilling, and to populate static and dynamic models to optimize development and production.

The extraction of reservoir properties from seismic data typically puts higher demands on amplitude fidelity, resolution, and bandwidth compared with structural interpretation. In an onshore setting, this adds to the existing complexities of processing land data. This is all the more true if the data is to be used in 4D for reservoir monitoring. An enhanced understanding of the reservoir facilitates better business decisions, for example targeting exploration wells with higher probability of success and optimizing field development plans.

The workshop will emphasize advances in seismic processing, conditioning, quantitative interpretation, and machine learning to satisfy the demands of reservoir characterization and monitoring. Case studies describing successes and lessons learned are particularly encouraged.

Who should attend?

We aim to promote dialogue between geoscientists involved in seismic processing, imaging, reservoir characterization, and monitoring, and engineers using their products for development and production. Hence, we invite all of these groups to participate in this workshop from both industry and academia.

Workshop format

The workshop will include not only general submissions but also feature presentations by invited experts in their field to share experiences and lessons learned.

The three-day workshop will have a morning and an afternoon session. We will aim for one keynote speaker per session. Each session consists of 25-minute oral presentations including Q&A followed by a 30-minute moderated discussion between the speakers and the audience. The objective is to maximize the discussion opportunity between participants, debate any issues and challenges in application of the workflows, and identify open issues. The session chairmen will serve as moderators during the discussions.

Workshop Objective

Advances in computing technology and increased availability of data have allowed the oil & gas industry to embrace the potential of machine learning and data analytics for solving some of the most challenging problems. Research and development efforts that utilize machine learning and data analytics approaches for geoscience applications have shown promising results and have cultivated a new wave of innovations.

This workshop is designed to showcase the successes and challenges of practicing machine learning and data analytics in the geoscience domain to improve accuracy and efficiency of algorithms and/or workflows. For example, in addition to existing applications such as seismic geobody identification and well log data analysis, what other challenging geoscience problems can be formulated and solved effectively by machine learning? How can machine learning algorithms and workflows be tailored to meet the specific physical constraints of geoscience data? How can we fully exploit the power of machine learning and physics-based approaches?

Velocity model building is the most important and critical element in seismic data imaging. The demands of exploring more complex new frontiers in particular will not be fulfilled without accurate velocity models. Understanding the fundamentals, and then challenging the approximations of seismic velocity estimations, limitations and pitfalls in practical applications, are the main keys of building the most accurate integrated velocity model. This approach, which exploits the relationship between the refraction, reflection, surface waves and non-seismic data, considers the wave propagation which is based on strong simplified assumptions. Accurate velocities are the main challenge for improving seismic data and depth prediction. For example, near-surface irregularities require accurate velocity models for proper imaging of the deep subsurface. Moreover, high-resolution velocities are also desirable for wave-equation based migration algorithms required for subsalt imaging.

The workshop is designed to provide insights for geoscientists to better understand the principles and limitations of both current and emerging technologies involved in velocity model building. As a result, participants should ideally understand how contemporary velocity estimation methods work, and what approximations are involved in obtaining computationally tractable solutions.

Workshop Format

The format of the workshop will feature presentations by invited key experts who will share their experiences. The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for open and extended discussions among the participants.

Six sessions (3 days). We will aim for one keynote speaker per session with a closing session at the end of the workshop to serve as the outlook going forward. The oral presentations are comprised of 20-minute talks followed by 5 minutes of Q&A. After each session, a 30-minute discussion session is planned. The objective of this session is to allow participants to discuss in detail and learn from each other what has worked for them and debate the issues and challenges facing them during their daily workflows. Session chairs will also serve as discussion leaders during the 30 minutes.

Poster Presentations are welcome to give ample time to the delegates to discuss the poster topic with the author(s). Posters will be in displayed in the workshop room available for viewing during coffee breaks and afternoon free time following each session.

2021 Coal Association of Canada Conference

The Coal Association of Canada has made the difficult decision to postpone our annual conference to March 10-12th, 2021. The conference will take place at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, as planned. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a threat to public health and safety, the CAC is following the advice of public health experts and government agencies and as such will not be hosting any in-person gatherings this year.

The Government of BC’s Restart Plan states that the hosting of conventions will be part of Phase 4, timing TBD, and is conditional upon at least one of the following: wide vaccination, “community” immunity, or broad successful treatments. Without any certainty as to when this will take place, the responsible decision is to postpone until next year.

The CAC recognizes the importance of our annual conference to provide market and industry updates to members and industry representatives. We are looking into the possibility of an online ‘virtual’ style event this fall in order to provide this valuable information to members and will inform you with details over the summer.

CAC Annual Awards Program:

The CAC Annual Award of Distinction and Community Champion Awards will be postponed to 2021 as well. Recognizing the exceptional work of the coal industry in Canada is of the utmost importance and we look forward to further nominations in late 2020 and early 2021. We will send out details again this fall in order to ensure members are aware of how to get involved in the awards process.

Annual General Meeting:

The CAC will be planning either a video or teleconference AGM in September. Details will be provided 21-60 days in advance of the meeting, per CAC By-Laws.
