Product overview

The Osprey data radio is designed to remove the barriers to entry for LTE networks in mining. Beyond the rugged heritage that comes with the Intelligent Endpoint (IEP) product line, the Osprey is designed to solve the challenges inherent to many LTE deployments, while continuing to offer an open platform. It includes both a high performance LTE modem, as well as the option of either a Rajant InstaMesh® node or Wi-Fi radio. In the case of the LTE/InstaMesh Hybrid product variant, the LTE modem can participate as one of the radios in the mesh, effectively creating a client meshing LTE solution.

The Hybrid LTE/InstaMesh Osprey

A fleet of Hybrid LTE/InstaMesh Ospreys provide greater connectivity than traditional LTE clients as the devices can mesh between each other to reduce network costs while solving connectivity, throughput, and L2 challenges on the LTE network:

  • A truck that is shadowed from LTE infrastructure by a nearby shovel can send his traffic over the mesh to the shovel Hybrid Osprey, which can then forward that traffic on via its available LTE link.
  • When LTE throughput is limited by the available spectrum, or due to heavy traffic volumes, introduction of a Rajant InstaMesh infrastructure node in the vicinity can provide load balancing, offloading traffic to the local network.
  • Traffic can be completely segregated, starting right at the machine, with applications like video and asset health being routed over an InstaMesh network and high priority traffic, such as autonomy, utilizing the predictability of LTE and being routed over that network.
  • Deployment of the Hybrid Osprey in a traditional InstaMesh network can allow coverage in some areas of the mine to be provided by LTE and its comparably reduced infrastructure requirement, such as in long distance hauls between pits, etc.
  • The Hybrid Osprey provides access to L2 capability over the L3 LTE links, solving the challenge of legacy mining applications on an LTE network.
  • The Hybrid Osprey provides powerful wireless integration capability as it can be configured as an LTE only client, a Rajant only client, a Wi-Fi only client, an LTE/InstaMesh client with Rajant Meshing, or an LTE/InstaMesh client with Wi-Fi connectivity.

The LTE/Wi-Fi Osprey

The second variant of the Osprey includes the same powerful LTE modem, as well as a standards based Wi-Fi module. This version of the Osprey is intended for those customers who simply desire the rugged capabilities of the 3D-P IEP in an LTE modem.

What makes the Osprey so unique?

The Osprey LTE implementation in all product variants offers the industry several unique advantages:

  • The LTE embedded modem is implemented using a standard M.2 form factor, allowing for the latest LTE technology to be leveraged as soon as it becomes available.
  • The Osprey includes an integrated RF switch allowing LTE modems with a single transmitter in the uplink to select the optimum antenna to transmit on based on signal quality. This insures that maximum mobility performance is maintained in varying terrain or through other obstructions.
  • The RF switch is implemented independently from the LTE modem, providing flexibility in modem choice.
  • The RF switch implementation includes a hysteresis algorithm to prevent flapping between transmit antennas.

The Osprey product line includes 3D-P’s powerful NPAT suite of data collectors that enable network monitoring from the edge. This critical tool allows network operators in the office, or around the world to see the performance of the network from the clients’ perspective, allowing them to keep up with the constant changes of the mining network performance even as the mines topology changes.

An open platform that supports the IEP_SUITE

The Osprey is designed to fully utilize 3D-P’s IEP_SUITE of software tools which enable direct and simplified integration and management of multiple mining applications. The Osprey also supports 3D-P’s powerful NPAT suite of data collectors that enable network monitoring at the edge.

The Osprey is designed to provide an open platform at the network edge and is capable of hosting simple applications that help improve operational intelligence. 3D-P will support you in implementing or porting any of your IoT applications to this versatile platform.
