(2nd UPDATE) Pan American investigating fatality at Timmins Lakeshore Mine

Jan 2, 2021

The Timmins Police responded to a call for service regarding a male subcontractor employee at the Lakeshore Gold West mine site who had been found on site as being “vital signs absent” during the afternoon hours of January 1st.

He was pronounced as deceased while being transported to the Timmins and District Hospital by ambulance. Timmins Police officials attended the mine site as well as the Timmins and District Hospital to complete various aspects of the investigation.

Next-of-kin notifications were completed at the hospital, as surviving members of the man’s family had been notified of the incident by Lakeshore Gold West employees. The Timmins Police continue to work in conjunction with the local Coroner’s office and officials from the Ministry of Labor in regards to this incident.

Statements have been collected from the mine supervisor by the Timmins Police along with other pertinent exhibits. At this point in the investigation, there is no reason to believe that the loss of life is the result of an accident or foul play.

The deceased, Craig HARRELL, 55, of Timmins, was a heavy equipment operator at the mine site and was working at the 600-foot level when his body was discovered at approximately 3:15 in the afternoon of January 1st.

All appropriate first aid efforts were undertaken to resuscitate him by Lakeshore Gold West mine rescue personnel. They transported the body to the surface level to meet the ambulance.

The scene was cordoned off to allow for a thorough investigation to take place in direct collaboration with the Ministry of Labor.

The investigation continues at present and is nearing completion.
