Canada Nickel Files Impact Statement for Timmins-based Crawford Project

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has achieved a critical milestone by filing the Impact Statement for its flagship Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada on November 22, 2024. Prepared by global engineering and sustainability leader Stantec, this step keeps the project on track for permitting and a construction decision in 2025.
“This submission reflects the extraordinary efforts of our team and partners and our commitment to meaningful collaboration with Indigenous communities and stakeholders,” said Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel. “The Crawford Project, projected to be one of the world’s largest and most sustainable nickel sulphide operations, represents a new era in Canada’s mining industry under the 2019 Impact Assessment Act.”
Key Milestone in Just Over Five Years
• The Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project is the first mining project in Canada to file an Impact Statement under the 2019 Impact Assessment Act.
• Extensive baseline environmental and socio-economic studies, informed by Indigenous Knowledge and community input, have guided the Impact Statement.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
• Funding Indigenous Nations for Traditional Land Use and Socioeconomic studies to ensure authentic participation.
• Hosting technical sessions, site visits, and open houses with Indigenous leaders, local officials, and stakeholders.
• Forming Environmental and Socioeconomic Committees with multidisciplinary experts to align project planning with shared priorities.

Economic and Regional Benefits
According to the bankable Feasibility Study, over its 41-year lifecycle, Crawford is projected to generate:
• $63 billion in revenue.
• Over 1,000 jobs annually during its operation.
• $7 billion in federal and provincial income taxes.
• $2.6 billion in provincial mining taxes.
• A total investment of $6.8 billion, benefiting Northern Ontario’s economy through job creation and business growth.
Next Steps
With the Impact Statement filed, the project will enter the Indigenous and public consultation phase. Canada Nickel remains committed to sustainability and collaboration throughout the Impact Assessment process.
