Canada Nickel releases 2023 ESG Report

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has released its 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and innovation in permanent carbon storage. This report highlights Canada Nickel’s achievements in reducing environmental impact, fostering Indigenous partnerships, and reinforcing governance, reflecting the confidence and support of key industry investors in the company’s vision.
“The progress we made in 2023 speaks volumes about the dedication of our team and the pioneering role Canada Nickel is taking in the nickel industry,” said Mark Selby, CEO of Canada Nickel Company. “As we advance, sustainability and innovation remain at the forefront of our strategy, driving our projects forward.”
Throughout 2023, Canada Nickel achieved significant milestones in its ESG strategy, including strengthening relationships with Indigenous Nations, enhancing social and community engagement, and refining its governance structures. These initiatives are part of Canada Nickel’s commitment to aligning resource development with environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and reconciliation.
“At Canada Nickel, Indigenous reconciliation and community engagement are not obligations—they are fundamental to our operations,” said Pierre Philippe Dupont, Vice President of Sustainability. “We prioritize open dialogue, economic opportunity, and delivering lasting benefits to the communities where we operate.”
Key Highlights of the 2023 ESG Report
• Indigenous Partnerships: Signed two new Exploration Agreements and provided $446,440 in payments to Indigenous Nations for capacity building and compensation for the potential impact of exploration activities.
• Safety Performance: Maintained zero fatalities, lost-time injuries, and high-consequence injuries throughout 2023.
• Local Community Contributions: 50% of new hires were from local communities, with 27% of the total budget allocated to local procurement, and $1.5 million directed toward local programs and partnerships.
• GHG Emissions Reduction: Enhanced permanent carbon storage (sequestration) capacity to 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂ annually over the mine’s lifespan, positioning the Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project to become one of Canada’s largest, and Ontario’s largest, permanent carbon storage sinks. Reduced exploration-related emissions intensity from 37 kg CO₂e per metre drilled in 2022 to 31 kg CO₂e in 2023.
• Governance and Diversity: Increased female board representation to 33%, refined board and committee policies, and established an ESG Committee to drive sustainability efforts.
“At Canada Nickel, we believe that sustainability is essential to building a resilient business for generations to come,” said Francisca Quinn, Chair of the ESG Committee. “This report reflects our commitment to embedding sustainability into all aspects of our operations. We value transparency and are proud to demonstrate how we’re creating lasting value for all stakeholders.”
Looking ahead, Canada Nickel plans to build on these ESG achievements as it advances the Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project in the Timmins Nickel District, Ontario. This project aims to set new standards for environmentally responsible nickel production, supporting the high-growth electric vehicle and stainless steel markets.
