Glencore sets date for Kidd Creek closure at end of 2026
by Kevin Vincent
Closure plans for the Kidd Creek Mine, first reported by Mining Life & Exploration News in 2019, have been confirmed by Glencore - the mine will cease production at the end of 2026.
The news comes shortly after the company announced the internal appointments of senior staff members, led by Corey McLister who will lead the planning process for both the mine and metallurgical sites.
"We confirm that Glencore announced last week the future closure of Kidd Mine at the end of 2026," said Alexis Segal, Director Government Relations and Corporate Affairs. "Indeed, following a period of exhaustive study, we were unable to identify a technical and economically feasible way of extending mine life to deeper zones. We will continue focusing on efficiency and safety during this operational transition. Our main goal is to ensure a smooth and responsible transition for our employees in this phase of change."
An estimated 900 people are employed at Kidd's minesite and hundreds more at the Met Site.
