Laurentian University’s Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) is leading a geophysical survey in the Timmins and Cochrane area from October 7 to November 15, 2020. They recently announced the commencement of the aerial survey over the Timmins, Cochrane area with hopes to advance the understanding of the underlying geologic structures of the area as part of their Metal Earth Project.

The survey looks to conduct aerial magnetic mapping along the western side of Highway 11 Between Timmins and Cochrane and stretches roughly 50 km to the south along the highway. Quantec Geoscience has been selected to provide comprehensive magnetotelluric (MT) and audio Magnetotelluric (AMT) surveys over the selected targets.

The Sudbury based research center has taken a leading role in the Metal Earth Project, a $104 million research and development program with a focus on expanding current understanding of the evolution of mineralization and improving and refining technologies for finding and targeting new potential ore bodies.

Dr. John Ayer, Associate director of MERC and the project leader on the recent surveying project has a deep understanding on the underlying geology of the area and hopes the project will add to previous surveys conducted by the metal earth project.

Seismic surveys were completed as part of the Discover Abitibi project, managed by the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, in 2004" Dr Ayer stated in a recent press release.  “This fall’s surveying will create unique regional and high-resolution images integrated with seismic, gravity, and magnetic data to better evaluate the geology and economic potential of an historic and world-class gold camp

The project partnered with local gold powerhouses Newmont  and Pan American Silver, with Newmont providing the funding to survey areas in the Tisdale and Matheson townships, and Pan American funding surveys on the west end of Timmins within the Loveland and Thorneloe townships.

All the data will be made publicly available as it is completed and will be available on their website https://merc.laurentian.ca/TimminsMT.
