Quebec’s Black Swan Graphene Joins Partners to Develop & Market ConcreteneTM

Mar 28, 2023

Black Swan Graphene Inc. a Quebec-based graphene production company and Nationwide Engineering Research and Development Ltd. (NERD) of London, England have formed a strategic partnership along with the Arup Group also of London, England .

The partnerships between Black Swan and NERD, and between NERD and Arup, will create an integrated supply chain aimed at accelerating the adoption of graphene-enhanced concrete globally.

Black Swan is a producer of low cost and high-performance graphene powders, derived from graphite, ideally suited for the concrete industry. Black Swan's graphene technology was originally developed by Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. and advanced internally until the launch of Black Swan in 2021. Thomas Swan is a United Kingdom-based global chemicals manufacturer, with a century-long track record and has been at the forefront of graphene innovation.

The partnerships announced today are poised to have far-reaching implications for the global concrete industry, “ said Simon Marcotte, Chief Executive Officer of Black Swan Graphene.

“By leveraging the exceptional performance of the NERD process and Arup's expertise, reach and leadership, this integrated supply chain can provide a turnkey solution and revolutionize the concrete industry on a global scale, “ Marcotte added.

“Considering that concrete is the second most utilized material on Earth, surpassed only by water, it is difficult to imagine a more exciting opportunity, “ declared Marcotte. “I am very optimistic about the impact of this collaboration and its potential to catalyze sustainable and innovative practices in the industry."

Black Swan has indicated its intention to significantly increase its graphene production including in the graphite production facility of Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. currently in operation in Quebec aiming to create an integrated facility from graphite ore in the ground to graphene finished products.

NERD, part of Nationwide Engineering Group, developed a graphene-enhanced amalgam for concrete called ConcreteneTM  that significantly increases the strength of concrete, allowing for cement use reduction and lowering of carbon footprint on construction projects. Graphene is very strong, light and flexible and is the most conductive material of both electricity and heat ever discovered.

Cement manufacturing currently accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions. Imminent legislative requirements for decarbonisation means the sector must act rapidly to ensure sustainability.

Concretene reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 30%, driven mainly by a significant reduction in the volume of concrete required to achieve best performances. The product has been developed in partnership with The University of Manchester's Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC).

Using the unique properties of nanomaterial graphene, an atomically thin form of carbon, Concretene is compressive, tensile and flexible  yet strong. It also cures faster and has less microcracking and reduced permeability to water and salts.

Together with GEIC, NERD is rapidly advancing the adoption of Concretene and is in advanced evaluation stage for projects with partners such as Heathrow and Manchester Airports, Network Rail, National Highways, and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in the United Kingdom.

The partnership NERD formed with the Arup group has the potential for  providing Concretene supplies to construction companies across 140 countries. Arup Group Limited is an internationally recognized design and engineering firm whose portfolio includes the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Paris’s Pompidou Centre, London’s Shard and New York’s Second Avenue Subway. www.arup.com/projects.
