Because working safely is the right way to work.

Aug 1, 2013

Safety Overview

Cementation is committed to safety because working safely is the right way to work. We care about our employees and feel that they deserve a safe work place and a safety culture they can embrace at work, and bring home as well. We also recognize that a safe contractor will be more attractive to both employees and Clients and this aligns with our goal of being both an employer and contractor of choice. Our target is always zero harm within our operations and for our employees and their families at home as well. Our vision as a company is to change the way mine contracting is carried out in our industry for the benefit of all stakeholders. The first change we want to make is to eliminate harm within our industry and the stakeholders who benefit from this most are the ones with the greatest personal stake in our company, our employees.

Health & Safety Policy Statement

The Management of Cementation Canada Inc. are committed to preserving the health and safety of our employees, our Clients’ employees and any other personnel that interact with our operations.

This commitment has resulted in establishing our ultimate goal of zero harm.

We expect our employees to be committed to safety, and to demonstrate their commitment on a daily basis through their actions and involvement in their work and the company safety programs and initiatives, and in strict adherence to rules, regulations, and procedures. We encourage our employees to take safe work practices home with them and get their families involved in living safely.

We will foster a culture conducive to reporting of unsafe acts or conditions in order that we may identify and negate those conditions before injuries occur.

We develop and maintain site specific, comprehensive safety programs for each of our projects and offices. We emphasize proper implementation of our programs, and expect participation by all of our employees. We promote proactive safety programs and initiatives and will work towards the continuous improvement of those programs.

We expect our safety professionals and our management and supervision to be passionate about safety, and to lead by example.

We are committed to safety because our ethics dictate that the people involved in our projects should leave work each day unharmed, because injuries in the workplace are unacceptable. We are committed to safety because it is the right way to work.

Industry Involvement

Cementation and our employees are leaders in the safety community and actively participate in regional, national and international safety groups and committees. Involvement is an integral part of our vision to change the industry we work in for the better. Employee passion and engagement to work safely and participate at all levels, allows Cementation to influence operating practices in the industry and to learn from other industry leaders. It is through collaboration, not competition that zero harm on all projects will be achieved.

Safety Share

Often when we talk about risk (exposure to) the possibility of injury, loss, damage or harm to others from a hazard, we sometimes forget about who might be best to manage the risk. Managing health and safety risk in the workplace is a collaborative effort between management, supervision and workers, but what’s very unfortunate is the fact that if risk is not managed effectively then in nearly all cases it is our workers who suffer the harm and loss.

Effective risk management starts with a commitment to health and safety from management. This commitment is transcended through the ranks of supervision and by establishing a culture of safety where everyone feels their personal responsibility and commitment to manage risk in the workplace. We also need the involvement and cooperation of workers, and by showing our workers we are serious about health and safety, they are more likely to follow our lead.

To be proactive in safety simply means we must be diligent and committed to risk management. Therefore it is important that risk management is planned. Risk management has four very simple steps. Step 1 is hazard identification (what could cause harm), followed by Step 2 that involves assessing the hazards and the potential risk (understanding the nature of the harm that could be caused by the hazard and the seriousness and likelihood of it happening). Once the hazards have been assessed, Step 3 involves controlling the risks (implement the most effective control measure for the circumstances), and finally Step 4 involves a review of the control measures to ensure they are adequate (working as planned). Through the whole process of risk management, consultation with workers is most important. The process of consultation involves sharing of information, giving workers the opportunity to voice their views and concerns, and taking these into account before making any decisions on health and safety matters. Worker consultation should be part of every step in the risk management process and by drawing on their experience, knowledge and ideas, we are more likely to identify all hazards and choose the right effective control measures.

By fostering a culture of reporting, we are asking our workers to report any hazards and health and safety problems immediately so that the risks can be managed effectively before an incident occurs.

Since we are all responsible for safety it is up to everyone to manage risk in the workplace collectively, and the final outcome should be a desired effort to ensure we all work together to mitigate the risk of any potential hazard in the workplace by consulting and agreeing to the best control measures. If we manage the risk together, then together we will all share in the success of zero harm.
