ALS Minerals

Inspection

Nov 26, 2013

ALS acquired Stewart Group in mid-2011, providing an entry to the commodity inspection sector and the founding of ALS Inspection.

The ALS Inspection Division inspects, weighs, samples, analyses and reports on the quantity and quality of  commodities to produce findings that can be used for final commercial settlement purposes.

Providing accurate, global Inspection & Analysis services for metals, minerals, ores, precious metals, ferro alloys and solid fuels, ALS Inspection is one of the foremost umpire and party analysis laboratories in the world. All sampling and sample preparation operations are undertaken to the highest of international standards and all laboratories are ISO 17025:2005 accredited.

Teams of surveyors are strategically located in major ports, smelters, refineries and steelworks and warehouses around the world to undertake precise inspection and sampling of commodities. Samples are dispatched to primary analytical laboratories in UK, Holland and South Africa with analytical results being used for commercial exchange purposes between buyer and seller.

Quality Assurance

Quality and Quality Assurance is fundamental to the ethos of ALS Inspection from job acceptance through to survey/inspection activity/laboratory analysis and reporting. ‘Exceeding Client Expectations’ and ‘Continuous Improvement’ are Core Values of the ALS Group and well entrenched in the Inspection Division work ethos.

ALS Inspection has maintained this focus through a programme of recruiting and developing staff of the right calibre with the right attitude. Staff are supported by a Quality Management System (QMS) framework which is designed to highlight data inconsistencies sufficiently early enough in the process to enable suitable corrective action to be taken in time to meet reporting deadlines. The QMS framework follows the most appropriate ISO Standard for the service at hand i.e. ISO 9001:2008 for survey/inspection activity and ISO 17025:2005 for laboratory analysis.

The QMS framework operates globally across ALS Inspection and it is audited locally, across locations and on a group-wide basis. Internal and external proficiency testing is carried out where Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) exist.

Certification / Accreditation

ALS Inspection has the QMs framework either Certified to ISO 9001:2008 or Accredited to ISO 17025:2005 in all of its locations. The Certification and Accreditation process provides valuable additional verification of the QMS framework through external audit by recognised independent organisations. In some instances this is a prerequisite of the specific industry e.g. solid fuels inspection and analysis.

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

LIMS allows ALS Inspection to track the real-time progress of samples through laboratories and to have complete confidence in the accuracy of the results produced. Under development is the capability to enable clients to view on-line the progress of samples and final results, including certificates.

ALS Inspection is at developmental stages for a similar system for Survey/Inspection offerings whereby clients can view progress of survey/inspection jobs in addition to on-line views of site locations and final results including certificates.
