Make the most of your experience

Students on campusOne of the most valuable aspects of a university education is exposure to a world of diversity and opportunity outside the classroom.

Both Saint John and Fredericton have vibrant campus communities, and the campus communities welcome students from across the country and around the world.

Extracurricular activities abound on both campuses with clubs and societies, varsity athletic teams, student governments, student newspapers, and campus radio stations.

University is often the place where people find lifelong friends. The best way to do that is get involved. There are plenty of opportunities if you pursue your interests, whether those interests lie in the realm of sports, the arts, or just plain socializing and getting involved with your residence.

Two great cities to choose from

Both the cities of Fredericton and Saint John have a lot to offer when it comes to student life.

A short walk from campus, downtown Fredericton offers theatres, bookstores, used record shops, live entertainment nightly, and a farmers market weekly.

This beautiful capital city has a lively downtown that invites exploration. It's safe, accessible and student friendly.

Saint John has a great traditional Maritime feel. The people are friendly, easygoing and eager to welcome new people into one of Canada's oldest cities.

Saint John's boardwalk and historical buildings are a great backdrop for adventure. There are all different sorts of restaurants, many with great seafood and drinks, as well as eclectic night life, with everything from live music to dance clubs.

Regardless of which city you choose, you'll find a welcoming community with lots to do.

Life at UNB Fredericton

The University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus has fun events going on at any given time and a great mix of people from all different backgrounds and mindsets.

In many ways, campus is its own self-contained community. All of the amenities you could need are on site, including a bank, a bookstore, restaurants, a convenience store, three bars, a clothing store, a jewelry store and salon.

The Cellar Pub and Grill, located in the basement of the Student Union Building (SUB) offers live entertainment, and you can enjoy a game of pool, great food and drink.

The College Hill Social Club is also in the SUB. This is a private, non-profit student club with great prices, great music, and friendly staff.

The College Hill Social Club is also located in the SUB. A private, non-profit student club, it offers great music and a friendly staff with a more high energy, club-like setting. The Social Club hosts events like trivia, karaoke and the like during earlier hours, and becomes a dance bar at night.

The Grad House is also located on campus right behind the book store. With an extremely laid back atmosphere, framed poetry on the walls, and a great selection of food and drink, this is the ideal place to go and relax.

The City of Fredericton
The City of Fredericton is full of fun things to do. A beautiful Cultural Capital of Canada, the city is host to a ton of festivals and special events such as the annual Harvest Jazz and Blues festival, public art shows, and cultural events celebrating everything from Asian to French heritage.

If you take the short 15 minute walk from campus to downtown, you will find bustling sidewalk cafes, patios where you can grab a beer, nightly entertainment in and around the tannery on King Street, unique local boutiques and galleries.

Fredericton is naturally beautiful city situated alongside the Saint John River. Stretching along the river is a 5 km long pathway system called the Green, which is connected to the other 60 km of walking/running paths that wind throughout the city. The capital also boasts the leafy, path-filled Odell Park for all the runners out there.

For those who like to buy organic vegetables and other local products, check out the Boyce Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. You can even get your breakfast there, complete with fresh squeezed orange juice. The market is also a great place to buy gifts and other treats.

Life at UNB Saint John

The Saint John campus is a cozy, tight knit community.

Many students say they love the small campus since it allows them the chance to really get to know faculty and other students.

It also allows for the opportunity to shine when it comes to extracurriculars, of which the University of New Brunswick Saint John has many. Though small, UNBSJ attracts a number of international students, enriching the cultural flavor of campus.

The Saint John campus is surrounded by acres of land overlooking the Kennebecasis River, which makes for beautiful scenery and the chance to enjoy the outdoors. Combined with the university's athletic facilities, this allows for the opportunity to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Although campus is in such a natural setting, there are regular bus runs to uptown Saint John and surrounding areas, and uptown is only a ten minute drive away.

Nightlife
It's no secret that university students go to school to do more than just study. The university experience is also about having fun, which is why the University of New Brunswick Saint John has a number of fun things to do at night.

Colonel Tucker's, UNBSJ's campus bar, hosts a number events from live shows to trivia to karaoke. It's also a great place to go to just play cards or hang out with friends.

The Students' Representative Council also plays a role in spicing up the nightlife on campus by holding Friday night dances on a monthly basis. Dances are well attended and a great place to meet people.

How to get involved
The best way to get involved is to just walk in to a club and try it out. Pay attention to notices on campus bulletin boards and try out for a team, or drop by the office of the Baron, the campus paper, and volunteer to write a piece. You never know, you might wind up as team captain or editor.

Aside from organized clubs and societies, there are numerous places to just hang out with friends. There's a campus bar, a Tim Horton's, a cafeteria, and numerous wooded areas where you can grab a seat and just relax.

The Students' Representative Council (SRC) holds regular Friday night dances, and these are a great way to get out there and meet people since they're such a popular event. The size of campus makes it really easy to get to know members of the SRC and learn about what's going on.

The City of Saint John
The City of Saint John has a bustling nightlife with a uniquely Maritime feel. As it's a port city on the waterfront, a lot of Saint John's activity takes place on the waterfront boardwalk. The area is flooded with specialty shops, quaint bars, pubs, and coffee shops, and all the friendly people you'd care to meet.

In the summer there are a ton of festivals and live shows, and in the winter there are cozy little restaurants and cafes to go to with friends, as well as holiday craft shows and regular concerts at Harbour Station.
