Anvil Introduces Non-Conductive Roller Assembly Pipe Insulation Solution Reduces Costs

Oct 22, 2013
Exeter, N.H., October 22, 2013 — Anvil International, LLC, the most complete provider of domestically manufactured and globally sourced products for piping systems, has introduced a non-conductive roller assembly. The patent-pending pipe insulation solution was developed by Anvil’s Engineered Pipe Supports division to solve a customer-specific issue, and the Company believes it has broader applications as well.

Barr Engineering and a pipeline transportation company engaged Anvil to develop a cathodic isolation solution for oil transported via pipeline within a terminal setting in northern Wisconsin. Ninety percent of the pipeline is underground and is exposed to a high voltage, low amperage impressed current cathodic protection system (ICCP). About one-quarter mile of this pipeline runs above ground and requires cathodic isolation from the rest of the system. Conventional PVC pipe slide pads were unable to work effectively given the high system loads.

Anvil’s engineers met the design challenges by developing a unique non-conductive roller assembly that effectively isolates the pipeline from the attachment structure while meeting the high load requirements. They built the isolation feature into the roller assembly, eliminating the need for PVC isolation pads and isolation bolting while reducing installation time and costs.

Pipeline cathodic protection helps prevent corrosion in a wide variety of steel pipelines used to carry water, fuel or other substances. It can either be a passive system utilizing sacrificial metal anodes, or an active system where an impressed current is run through the pipeline. ICCP systems are generally used in larger pipeline systems or systems exposed to corrosive environments. The effective use of an ICCP system can allow for thinner-walled piping to be used, reducing pipeline costs. Pipelines with ICCP systems that utilize Anvil’s non-conductive rollers can reduce build time and eliminate the costs of the isolation pads and bolting, thereby improving cost savings.
