The Ring of Fire is a mining area west of Attawapiskat First Nation involving many exploration projects. This area is an important headwaters source for the Attawapiskat, Ekwan and Winisk Rivers. Currently there are two mines proposed for the area by Cliffs Natural Resources and Noront Resources. Both of these proposed mines are close to the Attawapiskat River. A dedicated North/South haul road is also being proposed that will cross the Albany and Attawapiskat Rivers.
The Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs has adopted a Mushkegowuk regional approach to Ring of Fire Issues. We are currently building the staff capacity to address community concerns, participate in the various environmental assessments and begin negotiations with the companies involved.
