De Beers Charity Classic Tournament Raises Over $57,000

Jul 15, 2015
De Beers is proud to announce the eighth annual Charity Classic Golf Tournament held July 10-11 has raised $57,422 for the Health and Wellness Foundation of Hay River and Hay River Junior Golf.

The event featured 19 teams comprising players from De Beers’ business partners and community members. Including this year’s total, the tournament has raised close to $375,000 since it began in 2007. Funds were raised by donations from companies that participated in the event and fundraising activities at the Hay River Golf Club. Hay River is located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.

“Everyone had a great day playing golf, but the real winners once again are the people who receive health care services in the Hay River region,” said Glen Koropchuk, Chief Operating Officer for De Beers in Canada. “By working with our partners, De Beers is able to multiply the amount that can be invested in new health care equipment by the Health & Wellness Foundation of Hay River.”

The Snap Lake Diamond Shootout for a 0.5 carat Forevermark diamond raised over $2,400. Rachelle Saulnier, golfing with the Nahanni Construction team from Yellowknife, won the diamond, which was mined at Snap Lake and cut and polished by Crossworks Manufacturing.

The team from Kasteel Konstruction in Yellowknife shot the low score in the best-ball tournament, with the Kingland Ford foursome close behind. The team representing Det’on Cho Logistics was the tournament’s “Most Honest Team.”

“Proceeds from this tournament will help us purchase many of the items on our 2015 campaign wish-list,” said Heather Coakwell, Foundation Chair. “We’re really excited that much of this new equipment will find a home in the brand new hospital that will open later this year in Hay River.”

De Beers owns and operates Snap Lake Mine, located about 220 km northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. De Beers is also the operator of the joint venture Gahcho Kué Mine, now under construction about 280 km northeast of Yellowknife.
