Implementing a Reliability Process by Using Real-time Data and a User-friendly Dashboard: a Guarantee of Success

Dec 2, 2014
Plant management and maintenance managers sometimes wonder why the implementation of their reliability process failed. The main reason might be poor coordination with the different stakeholders involved. The lack of efficient communication and common objectives can also be the source of conflict and tension among individuals. Therefore, involving staff from other departments and improving their understanding of operations on the plant floor is instrumental if maintenance managers want to reduce downtime, lower maintenance costs and increase productivity.

The implementation of a reliability process involves the cooperation of major plant departments, such as maintenance, engineering and production. Access to plant production line data is essential to ensure team synergy and enlightened decision-making. By using key performance indicators and a dashboard entirely integrated into a maintenance management system, it is now possible to assert the importance of reliability in production processes.

To ensure true reliability, the right information at the right time is vital to make the right decisions. In the case of General Dynamics, a Fortune 100 multinational of the aerospace and defense industry, one major key to success promoted by the reliability approach is the capacity to develop a dashboard generating dynamic data that reflect real-time operations on the plant floor. In addition, the dashboard must focus on the key performance indicators (KPI) that make the difference in an organization at all levels of management. Lastly, customization of the dashboard should not depend on a company’s Information Technology department.
