Emerson Makes Progress On Environmental, Energy Initiatives

Company’s Climate Technologies unit updates industry leaders, Administration at second White House meeting on energy, environmental issues

Oct 15, 2015
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 15, 2015 – Recapping significant progress made this year, the head of Emerson Climate Technologies told industry leaders and the Obama administration today his business introduced a new line of efficient, environmentally friendly compressors and unveiled a new energy management system for small business. The unit of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), a leader in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, presented its update at the second annual environmental stewardship initiative session in Washington.

The discussion included top energy officials from the Obama Administration and continued a strong partnership between the White House and climate industry leaders working together to transform the industry. Bob Sharp, Emerson executive vice president and head of Emerson Climate Technologies, described the growing success of the company’s ground-breaking environmental initiatives first unveiled at last year’s White House industry roundtable.

“Emerson is proud to help our nation’s leaders understand that, with our customers, we drive transformational change across the global heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry,” Sharp said. “Over the last year, we delivered on our promise to increase energy efficiency while enabling the use of lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. We will only continue to build on that momentum that goes beyond government standards.”

In 2015, Emerson unveiled a full line of compressors and controls with refrigerants that are more than 50 percent lower in GWP compared to the products they were created to replace. The company also introduced the new Copeland Scroll™ compressors for supermarkets and convenience stores. These compressors, which are compatible with low-GWP refrigerants, are 15 percent more efficient than their predecessors.

Emerson increased production and training for products that use carbon dioxide, a natural and energy-efficient refrigerant. The new carbon dioxide line—the most complete in the industry—includes compressors, flow controls, discrete electronic devices and system electronic controls that enhance energy efficiencies in refrigeration systems.

The company also developed and released ecoSYS Site Supervisor, a system that combines energy management with the ability to monitor various systems to ensure top performance and efficiency for small retail facilities. The system allows operators to take advantage of energy savings and provides alerts when potential issues such as refrigerant leaks arise.

Emerson Climate Technologies invests nearly two-thirds of its global R&D resources on developing low-GWP and high-efficiency products, solutions and services and will continue that investment with the 2016 opening of its new Helix Innovation Center, in Dayton, Ohio. The $35 million center at the University of Dayton campus will focus on solving the energy and environmental challenges affecting homes, commercial buildings, supermarkets, restaurants, convenience stores and data centers.

“The new center provides a state-of-the-art space for the industry’s top researchers and developers to work together as they concept, create and test technology solutions,” Sharp said. “The Helix will allow our teams to not only make their ideas a reality, but to test their impact in real time, using one of five working industry modules. This one-of-a-kind center will help us continue building on our environmental initiatives for decades to come.”
