Jackleg Drilling Competition at Canadian Mining Expo Needs Participants

Compete for Cash Prize and Mining Statue by Sculptor Ernie Fauvelle

Timmins- Competitors are welcomed to sign up for The Northern Jackleg Drilling Contest at the Canadian Mining Expo on Wednesday, June 5th.
 
The competitions begin right after the Grand Opening at 11 a.m. by the jackleg drilliig rocks and the Tepee north of the McIntyre Curling Rink.
 
"We are looking for participants to come out, compete and have fun," said Glenn Dredhart, President and CEO of Canadian Trade-Ex, the company that hosts the Canadian Mining Expo and the jack leg drilling competition.
 
" Jackleg drilling is a way to celebrate the skills that have been so essential to successful mining, " added Dredhart.
 
The  competition has three categories - Mayors and Celebrities Challenge (11:30 a.m.) ; Women's Novice Jackleg (12:30 p.m.) and Professional  Jackleg ( 3:00 p.m., open to both men and women professional jackleg drillers). 
Registration starts at 11 a.m. by the rocks at First Nations Partnership Tepee next to the Curling Rink (Arena 2) or you may register in advance online.  On arrival all competitors must report and sign-in at Tepee and register an hour before their event begins. All equipment and gear are provided -bring warm socks.
 
The participants in the Mayors and Celebrities Challenge and the Women Novice events will be assisted by a team from Boart Longyear in handling the jackleg drill. The aim of these competitions is to drill one hole to depth of 24 inches . 
 
The winning Mayor or Celebrity will receive a “Pushing the Ore Cart” statuette by Northern Ontario sculptor Ernie Fauvelle. The winner in the Women's Novice event will receive the "Lady Miner Statue" also designed by Ernie Fauvelle and $125.00 in cash. The top three finishers will also  take home Canadian Tire Gift Certificates compliments of Boart Longyear.
 
The objectives for the Professional Jackleg competition is to safely complete the set up and dismantling of a S250 Secan Jackleg Drill. Safely collaring and completing two drill holes to a minimum depth of 600 mm. with a centre to centre distance of 6 inches.
Timer stops only when you stand up your rig. Speed comprises only one element of the scoring. Safe work habits, maintaining a safe work environment, precision hole alignment and professional conduct will be the major marking criteria. In case of a tie, the judges decision is final.
 
The first place winner will receive $300.00 in cash and  the covetted “Original” Driller collectors edition by Ernie Fauvelle ($400.00 value).  The  second place finisher will win $200.00 cash, and the " Pushing the Ore Cart"  by Ernie Fauvelle. The third place finisher wins $100.00 cash, and the "Mini Gold Panner "  plaque by Ernie Fauvelle.  
 
Awards will be presented at the awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m.
