Halon Recycling

SPI Health and Safety's Halon Group is a Canadian company dedicated to the recovery, reclamation and recycling of Halon 1211 and Halon 1301. The company operates on a national basis to recover Halon from all provinces and territories. Halon Resources Inc., as we were known up until January 1st, 1999, was registered in September 1996 to isolate the Halon recovery activity from the mainstream business of SPI Health and Safety. This structure was appropriate at the onset, since it provided the focus necessary to initiate an effective Halon recycling program. Once the program was established, for simplicity, we reverted to using our corporate name.

The formal certifications to recycle Halon in Canada were granted to SPI Health and Safety in February 1995 by the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada. SPI Health and Safety is approved to ULC Certification Category I (full servicing of Halon 1301 systems) which includes approval to ULC/ORD-C1058.5 (Halon Recovery and Reconditioning Equipment) and ULC/ORD-C1058.18 (The Servicing of Halon Extinguishing Systems). Although the individual provinces and territories have jurisdiction over environmental issues and have issued their own regulations, the Environment Canada Code of Practice on Halons (EPS 1/RA/3E – July 1996) provides the framework for our operational procedures. Following this Code of Practice allows us to be compliant with the individual provincial and territorial standards.

The Halon recycling facility is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario and has responsibility for the physical recovery and reclamation of Halon 1211 and Halon 1301.

Should you have Halon 1211 and/or 1301 systems in use or in storage, with a requirement to have these systems decomissioned, please don't hesitate to call our Thunder Bay Office.
