General Assistant

This position is primarily responsible for sample disposal, sample container recycling, and support general facility maintenance and improvements (e.g. shelf building). The General Assistant will also maintain a clean and organized work environment, and has a strong emphasis on servicing internal clients.
 
Specific Responsibilities
 
  • Disposing of samples and laboratory data following all standard operating procedures (SOP);
  • Recycling of sample containers that are no longer suitable for use;
  • Clean sample coolers for reuse and ensure there is an adequate supply for outgoing shipment  orders;
  • Transfer coolers from sample reception to the warehouse for cleaning;
  • Assisting with moving and tracking of samples from login to disposal and the moving and tracking of long term archive samples;
  • Maintain inventory of supplies;
  • Store, archive, and dispose samples and laboratory data;
  • Maintain a clean work area and perform basic building maintenance;
  • Provide general assistance as required;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
 
  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, writing, and reading);
  • Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and confident with computers;
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment;
  • Well organized, with proven ability to meet strict deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  • Commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
 
Required Qualifications
 
  • Some experience working in a warehouse or fast-paced environment is an asset;
  • Some customer service experience is an asset;
  • Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic lab safety is an asset.
 
Physical Demands
 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs./23 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Extensive walking or movement, bending, and kneeling for a full shift;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required.
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant fumes;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  • Ensures that work orders are entered accurately and in a timely manner;
