Construction & Engineering Superintendent

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 hours shift
 
Position Reports To: Manager, Capital Projects
 
Position Overview: The Engineering & Construction Superintendent is expected to be a safety leader on site and thus will be required to demonstrate experience in executing work with a safety focus and an emphasis on human performance.
 
A key function of the Construction Superintendent will be to mentor and develop the technical and construction members of the Capital Projects team. It is expected that the incumbent will introduce, expose and/or assist in the implementation of industry best practices to the team through their experience in the execution of past major construction projects.
 
Reporting to the Manager, Capital Projects, the incumbent will be responsible for the management and oversight of project related engineering and construction activities for multiple capital projects. 
 
Key Responsibilities
 
  • Champion the safety, quality, and environmental standards through each phase of construction for multiple projects;
  • Management of day-to-day oversight of construction contractors on site, including work coordination, safety program implementation, execution planning and ITP oversight;
  • Champion project scoping and RFP development;
  • Conduct site visits and project reviews to identify and provide solutions for potential risks and safety issues;
  • Oversee the development and rollout of industry standard construction processes such as work management, safe work practices, and contractor management;
  • Lead constructability reviews with a focus on successful project completions by mitigating potential obstacles;
  • Direct the reviews of Contractor pre-job safety and execution plans prior to project commencement;
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of all Construction related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Establish and maintain links with relevant site support functions to enable effective communication, planning and management of contractor/construction activities;
  • Actively participate in commercial aspects of the work (ie. contract development, claims management, progress reviews, estimates etc.);
  • Identify and communicate the priorities and weekly key milestones for the construction and technical teams;
  • Participate and/or lead risk reviews and contribute to developing joint New Gold and contractor risk registers;
  • Ongoing KPI reviews to develop action plans to make improvements where required;
  • Ensure completion of project turnover and closeout documentation and filing with document control;
  • Additional duties as required as 2nd In Command (2IC) in the absence of the Manager, Capital Projects.
 
Qualifications
 
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Construction Management (or other suitable combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working on large industrial projects (multidisciplinary - earthworks, structural, mechanical, electrical etc.)
  • Proven skills as a productive and collaborative member and leader of a multidisciplinary project team
  • Must possess effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities
  • Microsoft Office skills required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Computer savviness and ability to learn new software is also a requirement (ie. SharePoint, Teams, AutoCAD etc.).
  • Gold Seal Construction Management Certificate or Project Management Designation (or similar) considered an asset
  • Underground development and tailings dams experience considered an asset

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
 
  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
 
Compensation
 
A competitive salary, performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided.  This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
