Based at the Detour Lake Mine site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Projects Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our Major Capital & Infrastructure team reporting to the Capital Projects Senior Superintendent.  
 
Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt.The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.
 
The Projects Engineer in Training (EIT) will be accountable for the development and evaluation of projects, providing engineering expertise, and managing the schedule, budget and construction of projects from inception to commissioning.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Your responsibilities will include:
 
  • Assist the Projects Superintendent with the execution of the capital projects portfolio;
  • Lead site-based capital projects throughout the project development process;
  • In collaboration with the project sponsors, develop business cases, conceptual ideas, project scopes, technical feasibility reviews; 
  • Collaborate and manage engineering firms to complete detailed engineering for projects;
  • Develop project estimates, prepare and submit Application for Expenditures requests;
  • Collaborate with the procurement group to execute scopes of work, tenders, technical bid evaluations and assist with general contracts management;
  • Develop project schedules in alignment with the business requirements; 
  • With support from the Construction Supervisors, manage construction activities, monitor daily progress, coordinate activities and resolve conflicts. Ensure adherence to all construction health, safety, security and environmental policies and comply with all applicable legal regulations;
  • In collaboration with the Projects Cost Controller, manage project costs, review actuals to date provide forward looking projections, cost deviation and recommend remedial actions to stay on budget;
  • Complete project progress reports;
  • Provide input and support to the construction team during the execution;
  • Assist in the ongoing development and improvement of project management processes.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Our ideal candidate has:
 
  • Post-secondary education in engineering – Mechanical/Civil/Structural preferred;
  • Project management experience with strong understanding of the project management best practices;
  • Previous experience in mining and gold process plants an asset;
  • Highly developed communication and presentation skills (oral and written) that include excellent report writing, presentation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Highly developed interpersonal, problem solving, customer service orientation and team skills;
  • High degree of conceptual abilities and capacity to develop creative solutions;
  • Knowledge of the mining and construction regulations;
  • Ability to establish priorities and work under pressure to meet project deadlines;
  • Solid report writing, communication and presentation skills;
  • Effective problem-solving skills with a results-oriented approach;
  • Strong analytical skills.
